The plague bacterium is Yersinia pestis. Bubonic plague is spread only from fleas and causes "bubos" or large swollen lymph glands. IF you don't get treatment, you can develop pneumonic plague and begin spreading human-to-human by coughing. That would be a situation we would want to avoid.

Just a friendly reminder that plague is prevalent, including in the western United States (see, prairie dogs), with multiple cases annually. It is also highly treatable and, yes, lab acquired infections (incl. fatal cases) have happened over the years, including e.g., UChicago.

1/ Five cases of New World screwworm have now been confirmed in the U.S., Texas has declared an emergency, and Canada immediately restricted livestock imports. Most people had never heard of screwworm until last week (or maybe just now). That's because we eradicated it from the U.S. in 1966.🧵

I have a robot vacuum (like a roomba, but not a roomba) and I was able to purchase new brushes and filters and now it's working like new. Cost about $25 direct from the manufacturer. I wish more things had replaceable parts so we didnt have to repurchase the entire thing.
