As I've said before, it's only once I became a professor that I realized the entmoot, a meeting that goes on for three days and three nights, was a professor's joke about faculty meetings.

The Lord of the Rings is essentially a series of faculty meetings broken up by several long walks in the countryside.

1. Call an early election because the opposition is in chaos 2. Early election causes opposition to stop being in chaos 3. Polls move against you 4. Oh. *Really* against you (Conservatives will be majority government). 5. Resign

If you find yourself questioning her sanity or chalking her situation up to misunderstandings borne of neurodivergence, you are unfortunately not immune to bullshit. Not a great feeling! But she’s a liar and she knows she’s a liar.

Still covering Elon Musk as a business mogul and not foregrounding his murderous white nationalist politics is like doing a piece on only the clown career of John Wayne Gacy.

sigmund? sigmund it's your cousin marvin... marvin freud... you know the thing you've been talking about where there's some libidinal force inside us that seeks egoic shattering even unto death... well you're not gonna believe this but I'm looking at the news and im thinking, call it the death drive

On the one hand it is good to run stories of trump being abandoned by the faithful as a signal to other faithful that it is safe and reasonable to abandon him. On the other hand why would anyone care about the political journey of an 11 year old. Age 11-21 is for being a moron on that front.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

Michael Fusella supported President Trump for nearly a decade. But as the Iran war drags on and the cost of living continues to climb, the 21-year-old Republican said he feels betrayed by a president who said he’d end overseas conflicts and lower prices.

is there a term for this specific thing in text where what looks like a mistake is in fact a reference that conveys tone? (I refer here to "Love too" which allows us to understand immediately that the tone is a sort of wan or beleaguered sarcasm)

The TeX Live Utility release notes are still undefeated.

I would also like mainstream press and journalists throughout the world to understand that when you wring your hands about estrangement you are carrying water for this stuff regardless of your intentions

Announcement: My children's book is under contract with Dead Fox Publishing! They are doing an open call for illustrators (pay is revenue split with me), and I'll share a link to that in the next post. If you know any artists who do spooky, witchy, whimsical art, send 'em this way.

Gladwell's "analysis" is infuriating because it's why so many people throw up their hands in disgust with statistics & say "you can make numbers say anything." No! There's a way to do this well, and Gladwell just doesn't want to be fucked to do it.

I looked this quote up because I wanted to learn more about it and it has been a while since Gemini coughed up something this strange (I legit wondered if "the tribe of ipi" might be a gilgamesh-inspired videogame or something that I just had not heard of, but it does not seem to be....)

We must spread the forest, or we will lose the blessing of Ninsun. Are there no forges in Ur?

Anyway, the ostrich approach is as follows: However wealthy you are, that is poor.

Some people were making me mad on the internet so I wrote a blog post about it. On the different reasons for people have for being left wing and how people manage the psychological tensions of the fact that they come apart. sootyempiric.blogspot.com/2026/10/the-...

1) vance has this weird preoccupation with demanding that people show him gratitude 2) this is just another expression of the idea that some americans don’t count and at most should be seen and not heard

Another thing I’ve heard Goldin say about this is soft skills of communicating and negotiating roles within relationships have become more valuable for men, which explains why the decline in marriage is so concentrated among noncollege men

Grass Toucher Georg@avengingfem.me

saw Prof Claudia Goldin give a public lecture on why the fertility rate is dropping; the tl;dr according to her is that it's difficult for a woman to tell in advance if a man will help enough with childrearing to avoid fucking over her career. men need more credible commitment to being good dads.
