It’s really hard to have kids and a job. Even a flexible job w/just cause protections & economic security. I genuinely don’t know how people make it through - and this is such low hanging fruit to fix. Socialized childcare; 4 day work weeks. Wild that we don’t.

For those of you who knew John Crew, remember him with me today on the 4th anniversary of his death. I have not met a better person or friend in my lifetime. I miss you, dear John.

There is something so unbelievably bleak about an article that calmly walks readers through how to navigate being laid off after 50, losing your health insurance, and somehow surviving the years until Medicare. What a broken country.

This is mind bogglingly insane and utterly infuriating. Some of the most important academic research today is the social science and history that can help us understand how we got here.

More than any higher ed development in recent memory, institutional subsidies for AI at R1 universities prove that austerity is a choice. It is not “too expensive” to invest in a humanities research infrastructure; rather, it is a choice that R1 universities make not to & subsidize AI instead.

The amount of money I saw one department paying for several AI services in a school year could cover the University’s pay one price textbook costs for nearly their entire enrolled student body in said department
