one time when I was like fifteen I was at the louvre and happened to be in a white shirt and tie (having just come from church) and got mistaken as a security guard. my french was a lot better back then and of course I spoke english, so I spent like a fifteen minutes larping as a museum guard

hello gamers, unfortunately, I was slow getting my files to the printer, who are now telling me there are further delays, which means we have no cards. therefore, sadly, tonight's GCTCG event is CANCELLED. so sorry for the short notice and the inconvenience

I never used to run published RPG modules. OSR/NSR games like Mothership changed that a couple years back, and more recently, I had an experience with one that introduced me to another joy of running published material: the fun of a shared experience. onlyonpaper.bearblog.dev/a-cool-thing...

onlyonpaper.bearblog.devA cool thing about published modulesI used to refuse to run published game material. For the first 15 or so years I ran games, I insisted on homebrewing everything except the system itself[^1]....

tomorrow evening at 5:00pm!! we still have slots open—you can RSVP here: forms.gle/MQXcR6wmVoZe...

Fuck it, #Over/Under changed a lot of people's lives, including mine. Did you meet friends you still talk to a year on? Did O/U inspire you to start publishing material for games? Did O/U turn you gay? Answer my poll and I'll throw the results up in a sappy post in a week forms.gle/z6UvZVmBsCbE...

one of the big challenges of capital-L Lore in tabletop RPGs is that often getting the lore “correct”—making it tangible for the players—requires a bucket of very careful prep and work, but getting the lore “incorrect”—introducing some element that contradicts the Established Canon—is trivial

it's basically Dark Souls. present a big world full of concrete material challenges to overcome, challenges loaded with symbolism and meaning, but actually figuring what you're facing and why requires digging deep. you can beat the challenge without ever knowing the lore, but it's more fun if you do

you can do the same thing with player-facing material—eg, say, a crystalline musket stamped with a cyclopean owl as a starting item—but I think it's too easy to never pay those off. like if I can start with a crystal musket, eventually I want to find the crystal cannon foundry where they make those

these questions are part of why I find myself drifting towards historical or almost-historical settings for my games—historical settings usually have a correct answer to world-questions. the challenge is just doing enough research and then presenting that research clearly. hard, but not impossible

one angle on this I have noticed is that—surprise, surprise—adventures unlock new avenues. really big expansive adventures, your Shrikes and Wolves, can have "background lore" that *is* present and important, but the adventures are so mysterious you don't need to know all that lore from the getgo

this is very frustrating! I'm sympathetic to players and designers who espouse more anti-canonical approaches. the downside there I've found is that anti-canon often creates a situation where, when you talk about your game elsewhere, you use the same proper nouns but describe different things

I think having strong, concrete, well-defined imagined worlds is very valuable and unlocks new kinds of play, play that can't be done [as well/easily] in more anti-canonical modes. and sometimes it feels like lore might be a way to do that, writing background and history, but that makes me nervous

like because most RPGs, especially kitchen-sink fantasy RPGs, start from "anything is possible," a lot of lore-writing is mostly about negation. when you say "dragons are born from fallen meteorites" that means finding a dragon egg is now impossible, and if that does happen in your game it's Wrong

GCTCG is an on-and-off project I've been noodling on for about three years. I've run a couple of short leagues with students and faculty at the NYU Game Center, and it's gone pretty well! if you want to read the rules, they're available online here: docs.google.com/document/d/1...
