Thank you to @sepinwall.bsky.social for actually writing this and talking to me for it, and to @garyjackson.bsky.social for the most concise summation of Sorkin’s ethos I’ve ever seen: “I want to be rude to a blonde woman.”

whatsalanwatching.comAnatomy of a disaster: Aaron Sorkin's 'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip'Why do comedy writers still love talking about the infamous bomb?
Tim Carvell@timcarvell.bsky.social

Consider this an alert to outlets that cover entertainment: The 20th anniversary of “Studio 60” is coming up in September and every comedy writer on earth will talk to you about their continued horrified fascination with it.

So, just to think about this. Inside of a week, America's government tried to murder a prisoner, but failed and instead just tortured her into a coma for a while. And the American government's response to that was, "let's do it again but with guns and on live TV."

Things like this make me think of the large groups of Professionaly Catholic people I knew and worked with decades ago, and how so many of them have gone conveniently silent on things that were, before Trump, theological slam dunks. Hard to ascribe a cause other than: bad cowardly people.

the centrists are living in a simulated alternate reality just as much as the trump cultists are

It’s funny… I still haven’t found a white moderate who thought MLK's quotes on white moderates applied to them. Or even one who can name people in that category. Guess they all just disappeared.

Yep. “How do we get Celtics fans from Southie to buy Brunson jerseys?” But the people genuinely asking how to win back the ~27% of America that’s ride or die for Trump are usually doing it because they don’t want to admit their MAGA friends / family are bad people who like Trump’s bad actions.

ceej@ceej.online

“how do we win back trump voters in 2026” we don’t. we create an environment where admitting to voting for trump is so socially embarrassing as to render them completely inert. you don’t “win back” trump voters. you demoralize them into staying home. you make it a dunce cap

They're not sending their best.

A phenomenal moment in the Senate. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., claims he has evidence Jack Smith went to a HAWKS game in Atlanta. Smith denies it. Schmitt declares he has busted Jack Smith for perjury. Smith, vexed, says he went to HAWKEYES game in Maryland. WATCH IN FULL, UNINTERRUPTED

The oligarch class is deeply freaked out by how badly Republicans are losing the midterms, not because of 2027 (Trump already a lame duck) but because of the possibility of 2029 featuring a huge Dem Congressional majority. Look for the run-up to the midterms to be an oppo dump on D Senate candidates

Voting ends tomorrow. If you’re a WGA East member who would like your white-hot rage to be poured into a labor forge that will (losing the metaphor here) shape it into a tool to fight our enemies, I will do that. And I’ll work on the metaphors.

For months, the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger faced something recent Hollywood megadeals rarely have: real resistance. Then it all collapsed. Monopoly expert Matt Stoller tells Richard Rushfield who was pushing for the fight to end https://mrf.lu/2SQwL

the way to keep yourself from becoming despondent when each of these horrible things happens is to realize every potential one *is* going to happen for quite a while - until we reach an election, or a politician with the power to stop things breaks from the ‘norms’ and puts their wrench in the gears

By the time this merger ruins HBO, destroys WB, gets 5,000 people fired, moves production overseas, and guts the quality of the movies the new studio makes, most people will have forgotten how fast the AGs caved and how little they got in this deal. Writers will not.

lest @agrobbonta.oag.ca.gov get any delusions of becoming the next Kamala: the thousands of entertainment workers fucked by this merger will spend the rest of our natural born lives telling people how much of a cowardly loser you are. may you be primaried by someone with an actual spine. get bent

Particularly in California, voting for a Democrat is just voting for a Republican who pretends to feel guilty. Rob Bonta is an enabler of fascism. That should be his lead credit for life, just ahead of “craven coward.”

As any good tactician knows, the best time to give in to a bully is days before their self-imposed crippling consequences kick in.

Paramount reportedly tried to ram through a bad deal by using a holiday break as leverage. I know this exact move... because I remember it from 3 years ago, when a network CEO screamed at the WGA that strike negotiations were going to make him miss his private plane and his island vacation.

The possibility that the California AG could move toward an agreement without the structural remedies he previously demanded did not sit well with some inside CNN, who are now facing the prospect of working for Ellison. “It’s lipstick on a pig,” a person close to the CNN newsroom said.
