Scientists off the coast of Washington state filmed a pod of over 20 Southern Resident killer whales. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance told CNN their researchers, alongside SeaDoc Society and NOAA, are using "non-invasive health monitoring technologies" to study threats to the endangered species.
I've been proud to serve as the faculty leader for this effort. It has been a pleasure to interact with passionate students and emerging science communicators for many years now! We publish annually. I encourage you to check out past issues and follow! @uwsafs.bsky.social@trevorabranch.bsky.social

🐋📏Longer body size means more female calves for baleen whale moms, contradicting a popular evolutionary theory postulating that strong mammals benefit more from birthing males.

Last week the drone pilots in my lab captured this image (photo 1) of a large sea lion haul out @ San Carlos Beach in Monterey during our monthly surveys. Last year (photo 2) a large sea lion haul out was seen at the same beach. This might be turning into a new haul out site. @uwsafs.bsky.social

Our drone team recently returned from a survey trip where they captured this large sea lion haul out on San Carlos Beach; a popular dive spot in Monterey. The beach was the scene of a similar large haul out at the same time last year. @uwsafs.bsky.social@uwmarinebiology.bsky.social#drones
The Mazama newt is found in only one place in the world: Crater Lake. But this tiny amphibian is disappearing, due to invasive crayfish taking over its habitat. We’ve teamed up with the National Park Service and High Desert Museum to give this rare newt-y cutie a fighting chance.
