Told the kids we were going to El Cerrito yesterday for their friend's bday party and the whole drive, they were like "ok but where IS the small montaña"

Here's the first of a series I'm writing on Guzmán's work. Tomorrow will be the 7-year anniversary of the biggest protest (1.2 million people) in Chilean history. The 2019 "estallido social" is the subject of Guzmán's last film. It's weird to watch documentaries age substack.com/home/post/p-...

In 2019, 75% of respondents said they'd banged a pot in protest in 2019. In 2026, 32% said they had (up from 21% in 2024). Dynamic responses to a static past are gold mines, analytically speaking. Did 43% of Chileans just ... forget they joined in? Or want to pretend it never happened?

My 2nd-favorite chart from a poll of Chileans shows the answers to some concrete questions: 1) Did you participate in the 2019 protests? 2) If so, how? In 2019, 44% said they'd marched in the estallido. By 2026, only 26% said they had. That 18-pt gap says a lot about modern political psychology

We have other jobs so it's one object a week for us, but we'll go long on it. Could be a film, TV show, essay, book, etc. and once we're in rhythm we'll let people know what is coming so that they can follow along, if desired

Part of the backstory here is that I was sad to see Slate's culture podcast wrap its 17-year run; I had learned a lot about movies, music, books, etc. that were worth thinking about through it. I encouraged Aaron and Lili to do a culture podcast and they told they would if I did, more or less

hello! the day after yesterday seems like as good a time as any to introduce what I've been working on since getting laid off from the Washington Post (plus or minus a couple of decades). welcome to Some Personal News: confessions of an ex-pundit

The kids are writing letters, laboriously copying messages we've written for them. Nicanor wanted to write "Thank you dada and mama for my robot shoes" and "Thank you for making me a necklace." Cala wanted to write "I want to look like a fish."

I guess bureaucratic housekeeping always drifts toward the existential (today, while googling what to do re: a security retirement account so small it won't be permitted to continue existing as a "pension," I ran across a heated discussion of conversions vs. rollovers. it was poetry)

this spooked me being good for little else, and having developed an ear infection AS AN ADULT, I spent a few days compiling PDF copies of things I've published since 2016 the stuff I could access amounted to ~560 pieces I have several feelings about that the main one is: that is too many pieces

Getting laid off makes you grabby or perhaps clippy Last week a friend tried to read a piece I wrote years ago (may we all be blessed with such friends!) but found it paywalled. did I have a copy? I ... did not I don't have most of the things I've written oh no

You are up to date.
