Note the signs of the US brand of agricultural exceptionalism: everyone w/ power to do stg is concerned about the poor farmer and not the farmworkers. Gvt regulations are nonexistent/not enforced, animals are treated like 💩 and the public bears the burden of the situation in health/financial terms.

Here’s something you should know about minks: They have lungs and airways remarkably similar on a cellular level to those of people. They’ve spread flus and infected humans before with COVID-19. Right now, bird flu is spreading on a Utah farm filled with thousands of them… 🧵

A fantastic new Razorcake magazine piece about Michelle Swanson and Lucky Cat Records, the awesome shop established in the former Oar Folkjokeopus space. “This is the first in a series highlighting the trials and triumphs of Femme Founders operating in the music scene in Minneapolis.”

“Is this phenomenon 5% responsible or 90% responsible for the health effects we are seeing, I can’t answer,” Columbia researcher tells me during an interview. “But I would be surprised if it doesn’t play any role.”

chicagotribune.comMicroplastics trigger inflammation linked to disease and death. Now scientists appear to have discovered why.Chemical reactions between water and six types of fossil fuel-based plastic created particles that damaged red blood cells and proteins in laboratory tests, research shows.

"The importance of the greenhouse gas data they were collecting would be underscored weeks later as climate change fueled Canadian wildfires choked the very Lake Superior north shore we travelled along with thick black smoke."

At a high level, water is held in trust, by the state for the people. The Public Trust Doctrine. Legally, it's more complicated. That bottled water companies are allowed to take the public's water and pay next to nothing for it is the moral issue. Environmentally, single use plastic is a problem.

Live juvenile invasive carp were recently found about 80 miles from Lake Michigan, advancing closer to the Great Lakes. That's why keeping the Brandon Road Interbasin Project moving forward, without further delays, is so critical. 🎥 Hear what this latest discovery means for the Great Lakes:

“There’s two types of sailors on the Great Lakes,” the captain told me. “Those who have been seasick, and those that will be seasick.” Having spent a lot of time on the ocean without once getting sick, I was skeptical. The captain was right.

“It’s definitely not an ideal scenario for me personally or for the work that the EPA lab in Duluth was doing. A lot of great projects, a lot of great researchers have been sidetracked, forced to relocate, forced to reevaluate their career decisions and priorities," he said.

What I hadn’t realized was the work and the ship never stopped. The Heron kept on steaming through the night. Working in shifts, both the crew and the science team never ceased. 24/7 they would work like this. While I was only onboard for three days, they would tirelessly work for the next 17.

I met Max Wilder who came to Duluth for a postdoc that was supposed to be shared between the EPA and the University of Minnesota Duluth, with the bulk of the work at EPA. According to Max, due to federal funding cuts and restructuring, his program was cancelled shortly after arriving in Duluth.

Profs John Kessler and Tom Weber from the University of Rochester’s Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences led the science team. Their aim was to measure and map the amount of the potent greenhouse gas methane – a major contributor to our warming atmosphere – emitted by all five Great Lakes.

The importance of the greenhouse gas data they were collecting would be underscored weeks later as climate change fueled Canadian wildfires choked the very Lake Superior north shore we travelled along with thick black smoke.

“Compared to what we know about the oceans, we know very little about the Great Lakes,” Rachel Flickinger told me. Rachel is a PhD student in the University of Rochester’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and a member of the trip's science team.

Bipartisan consensus! [HENDERSON] Chris Jones, what’s your view of the president’s decision to import beef to lower the price of ground beef for consumers? [JONES] It’s one of the stupidest ideas I’ve ever heard of. [HENDERSON] Mike Naig? [NAIG] It’s a bad idea

Really excellent debate over Iowa (and by extension US) agriculture and environmental policy between ag secretary candidate @theswinerepublic.bsky.social and incumbent Naig.

Primaried coward. Duder carried a lot of water for SNAP cuts. He lied to my grandfather about Keystone going over our farm. He found that lacking in character.

Partisan squabbles are keeping Congress from effecting change, and President Donald Trump has made it worse when he has “lost focus,” said South Dakota Republican U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson, who added that he finds many of Trump’s personal characteristics “lacking.” buff.ly/7E4Uc2k

Wrote it with Rob Smigel. And yes, it was pulled from reruns.

This aired just the once in 1998 on the live SNL show for which McKay wrote it. It was effectively banned as it never aired again. I wonder why. MEDIA-OPOLY
