This aired just the once in 1998 on the live SNL show for which McKay wrote it. It was effectively banned as it never aired again. I wonder why. MEDIA-OPOLY

Media consolidations made possible by "centrists" passing the Telecom Act of 1996, & still going strong now that the state AGs blocking the Paramount-WB merger have settled in exchange for some financial table scraps & "promises" not to do bad things.

Credits say it was written by Robert Smigel. In any case: VERY subversive. Americans are not supposed to think about our corporate overlords!!!!!

McKay didn’t write this. As noted at the end of the video it was Robert Smigel. McKay was the head writer at the time so he did approve it but TV Funhouse was all Smigel.

The corporate memory hole is the only cloud storage with 100% efficiency. Turns out "too true for TV" is the only metric that still triggers an automatic delete.

I vividly remember watching this. Also Michael Moore’s Awful Truth tv show had a feature about this. I was a high school sophomore when the telecommunications act of 1996 passed. I tend to trace that to a lot of bad things that have happened—and continue to happen!

well the PCB’s part is very inaccurate. they were getting phased out some where around 70’s or should have been. and they weren’t created by power plants. PCB’s were used as insulating oil (dielectric medium) to keep substation equipment cool. then we learned better.

Brilliant. In the 90s, was an insert into the Village Voice or L.A. Weekly that said “Winking, Blinking, Nod” that mapped out these connections in media ownership and control. It was put out by organization for media freedom.

People who get mad at 'Main Stream Media' don't seem to grasp that deregulation allowed the Broligarchs unlimited mergers and acquisitions, and that *they* control the message. Oh, and 90% of news folk have been laid off since the turn of the century. 'MSM' is nothing more than a hollow phrase.

“That system was bad” “But right wingers made it worse while liberals stopped the left from enacting reforms so you shouldn’t have complained about it in the first place” Pretty much sums up the last fifty years.

Letterman made a lot of similar jokes when GE was buying NBC …probably about the same time Norm was getting fired too… the corporatist have been doing this horseshit for a long time, AI crashing the DOW will be a positive in my opinion.

The free press is no longer free, it’s owned by big corporations with vested interests. Saudi Arabia and Qatar which have no free press at all, love buying media companies in other countries. Media has become propaganda and the billionaires know how powerful that is.

The Canadian English word Cons-piracy.. Even if Canadian Conspiracy and "News that is Fake" are polar opposites.. One is truth suppression.. the other is making up a lie.. AI will agree that AQ doing 911 is a cons-piracy.. Nobody denies that.. but Bush Sr/Jr partnered them and ran the show..

It's not that complex.. It's Bob Lazar UFOs in the Garden of Eden, Iraq.. Or if it is that complex then Moses was black and Aisha was 19.. Pre Adam UFOs and ancient gold (Silk Road & El Dorado) for the Elite.. Oil and minerals for the Trumps/Putins The Abraham games are for the poor (and rich)

I worked at each of the three networks in turn, and was at each when they were acquired by Westinghouse, GE, and Disney. We all knew where it was leading. I also worked at WNEW Channel 5 when Murdoch bought it. Great clip, thanks for posting.

It was planned with the Powell Memo (Project 2025 of 1971). Initiated with Buckley v Valeo + Belotti. Reagan did his part, PATCO + tax cuts. Heritage, Federalist, Kochs,... Rush + Fox News. Newt Gingrich + Denny Hastert. Citizens United + McCutcheon. Astroturfed Teaturds. Moscow Mitch's SCOTUS.

It's so true, but no mention of who owns all of America's media! From Holly wood, to your TV, newspapers, music recording studios, sports franchises, book publishing, Magazines, radio, and all social media, a monopoly all locked down. This is not free speech, on any scale.

First, Bravo SNL!! Fantastic way to extend the legacy of Schoolhouse Rock (and a great message, too!). Second, I will forever be grateful to have grown up in the Schoolhouse Rock generation. I still strongly believe the entire catalog should be required viewing in K-4th grade, at least.

NBC is proudly displaying it's 100 year marker on the network; would love to see SNL feature that skit as some sort of commemorative for its own history within the 100 years of NBC!

They were forced to add the "voices" line. Original writer did not want that. It's extremely trivial to make a person hear voices, BTW. Just about any engineer who is open to the possibility could figure it out.

TBH, well informed people were well aware of these connections & dynamics. I remember seeing this animated segment the first time it aired, and while I was delighted by the parody and reinforcement of the message, but if you weren’t aware of this by the late 90s, you were willfully ignorant.

Tho it wasn't specifically about media mergers, the excellent film Network predicted informative news devolving into infotainment, corporate interference, "reality" TV, and rage bait, back in 1976.

This is great! I don’t recall seeing this before. IMO Frank was astute as Carlin & Sagan. Most Americans sadly never heeded their warnings. And here we are…people are truly suffering. VOTE BLUE💙 SAVE OUR DEMOCRACY💙SAVE OUR REPUBLIC💙

I vaguely remember seeing it on SNL. We knew we were in trouble long before the corporate take over. It started after WW2 when Defense contractors saw how profitable War had become. Now, nearly 90 years later, we're deep in debt and less safer than ever.

I'm sure GE (SNL's owner at the time) and the other cronies made sure that was squashed. In the 90s SNL was brave and got several live digs in at GE, etc. In the opening monologue by Tim Robbins in 10/92 (the Sinead O'Connor episode) he said, "GE... we bring good things to death."

Actually, creator Robert Smigel says that it was cut from future airings because it wasn't funny enough or durable for repeat viewing. And in fact, he says was surprised NBC even allowed it to air at all. Especially after the extensive review process.

AH.... so nostalgic - - when the FCC was censoring salacious content instead of imposing loyalty tests to a corrupt anti-democratic likely pedophile wanna-be dictator with a fetish for gold acting on whims informed by his many psychiatric issues.

It was most likely GE/NBC that wasn’t happy with being called out in this segment. I don’t think they have say over the DVD releases, which I believe belong to Broadway Video, which is the parent company of SNL.

The dvd looks to also be available as a digital purchase on Prime Video, tho not sure it's the same contents. GE is long gone (sold off their share in 2013), NBC is owned by Universal now.

Well, yeah, that’s my point; any sort of “banning“ of the reairing of this segment was most likely in effect in the early 2000s when NBC was still owned by GE & they would have been able to nix any reearrings. Thanks to the reshuffling of corporate ownership & passage of time, any bans are gone

Same as when Sinéad O’Connor was boycotted for burning the pope’s picture for all the Catholic abuse towards women and children and now she’s regaled as a true heroine for speaking out. So hypocritical🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

In a subsequent SNL show, host Joe Pesci taped together/restored the picture of John Paul II Sinéad had torn in half when she sang Redemption Song protesting the Church's abuse of children and young people. Some of us olds still remember but like Ms O'Connor we're not long for this world, sadly.

The sketch’s main point: thousands of channels give the illusion of a free market, when the pipeline of information is strictly controlled. With tech monopolies, algorithms, and corporate-owned streaming giants dictating what goes viral shifted from traditional media to digital gatekeepers!
