To address the broader claims, we need experiments that distinguish temporary interference from enduring changes in attentional functioning (if any), and effects specific to digital media from general cognitive limitations. The methods must match the claims we're trying to test.

Most experiments test how digital media affect performance when attention is divided. These studies largely demonstrate well-established cognitive limitations: competing demands interfere with performance. They tell us much less about whether everyday digital media use changes attentional capacity.

@tobiasdienlin.com, @mvreiss.bsky.social, & @moritzbuchi.bsky.social maintain a sheet that catalogs how media & communication journals implement open science/access. I've built a page that pulls this sheet and displays it as a searchable/indexable webpage. dougaparry.github.io/opencomm-jou...

Super important and dear to my heart! Also a good opportunity to remind people of the super helpful systematic list of open science/access media and communication research journals by Moritz Büchi and @tobiasdienlin.com here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

This is a great overview of next steps for data/materials sharing after OSF. I'm curious, is there any discussion of moving preprint overlays like @psyarxivbot.bsky.social (not sure of profile... @improvingpsych.org) or @socarxiv.bsky.social off of @cos.io infrastructure? What are the alternatives?

Thoughts on the unannounced (?) new submission/presentation policy for #ICA27? In principle I can see some form of limits supporting equality, but surely limits on submissions (say 3?) would be a better approach, especially given the ICA review lottery and the risk of a single ‘shot’ at it…

I'm back working after ~3 months off to care for my son. And it looks like its going to be an interesting time for social media regulation in the EU! I wrote something about my thoughts on the leaked proposal regulations for social media in the EU. www.linkedin.com/posts/dougap...

This is a great read. Summarises a lot of recent ideas and conversations. Also reminds me somewhat of @anneo.bsky.social's social media era's presentation at #MediaPsych last year.

Social media is no longer social. Most of it is passive viewing of videos and pictures from people we've never met. But we're still studying social media like it's 2010. We've entered the post-social media era — and research needs to catch up. osf.io/preprints/so... preprint w/ Richard Rogers

Odd choice for a headline (and on a 1 April...)?! A quick skim of the papers shows that with only a few exceptions most replication areas achieved >50% (a low bar..)? That said, the reproducibility findings are pretty damning, and point to reporting problems and nontransparent materials...

The death of writing will not be caused solely by AI; it will also be perpetrated by concerned educators who now perceive academic essays as outdated. In the end, this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: If students are solely trained to do oral exams, it is unsurprising if writing skills take a hit

Attention is not a fixed resource that some people “have” and others lack. It is a regulatory system that allocates effort based on expected reward and uncertainty. When outcomes are unclear or delayed, attention naturally destabilises. External structure often works better than pressure.

For #ICA26 I received many very useful reviews (on both accepted and rejected papers) but I think these two take the cake (on a student led paper). Sure, it’s what we wanted to hear, but…

About 18 months ago I sent this letter, along with a copy of my book, to a number of MPs and peers, including Wes Streeting. I never got a response (which to be fair was my baseline expectation), but it’s still disheartening to see today’s news about Haidt’s invitation to speak to policymakers.

Pete Etchells@peteetchells.bsky.social

Here’s the full letter:

YouTube now offering 4x playback speed... um, what? I quite regularly speed up content but 4x feels excessive. I'm genuinely curious what the experience is (not a premium subscriber) and motivations would be here (both for users and the platform).

I can only assume that no peer review happened here?! Seems that this was a scheme by the journal to boost IF?
