It was obvious back in 2016 that EU would develop strategies for key industrial sectors. They even put in place Skills Agenda 2016, employment-social-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies-and... Over the last 10 years what have successive UK governments done ? Very little. Our policy making is out of date.

So here it is, why Made in Europe and the general air of major power coercion are key to Andy Burnham's rejoin and free movement talk. A world about as far as possible away from the Brexit vision as it could be - and an incentive for the pro-EU side. rejoinrejoin.substack.com/p/made-in-eu...

Update...it's not just Canada 🤦‍♂️ As a cost-cutting measure, NWS has removed ALL international observations (outside of US buoys) from its site. A shame that such a simple and helpful tool had to be removed due to the Trump administration's anti-science budget cuts.

The UK didn't replace ageing infrastructure when interest rates or borrowing costs were low. Now a lot is coming to the end of its life. So we have no choice to pay a lot more to replace. Just short-sighted policy making.

Richard Jones@richardaljones.bsky.social

"Britain cannot build its future by returning to the 1970s" says Martin Wolf in the FT. It was in the 60s & 70s that the UK built the infrastructure that it sweated & ran down in the 80s & 90s. We stopped building for the future, and now the future has arrived.

BIOMASS will help reveal wide paleochannels over the target areas. Though smaller channels will still be missed - the spatial resolution of the focussed SAR data doesn't have sufficient spatial resolution to resolve them. Other approaches are required say VHR #ALOS2 (L-Band) or airborne/drone SAR.

In August, Trump announced the “BIGGEST OIL DEAL IN WORLD HISTORY!” But is it? The text of the accord — which grants the U.S. sweeping access to Venezuela’s oil reserves — has been one of DC’s most sought-after secrets. ProPublica got to see a copy. 🧵

The problem is not really Jackdaw, which is pretty small. The problem is the UK's plan to transition away from fossil fuels is still not ambitious and detailed enough. The problem is if Rosebank follows. The problem is if every country develops one last fossil fuel project we're all screwed.

This decision won't persuade Reform UK voters to go back to Labour. Instead they will see it as validating their own worldview. For others concerned about impacts that climate change will have on their children and grand-children, and wider environment, it make them more likely to turn on Labour.

Rage Against the Miocene@organiccarbon.bsky.social

For decades, oil and gas companies have polluted the public conversation about climate action with toxic misinformation. But an equally sinister barrier to action is the unwillingness for any nation to leave their natural resources unextracted and unexploited. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Why should be trust the Conservatives with economic policy again ? - they failed to invest when national debt and borrowing costs were lower - they stripped back public sector state provision so when a crisis did hit the state was unable to respond We now have war in Ukraine & Middle East.

Andrew Sissons@acjsissons.bsky.social

Pretty striking to see Andy Haldane, one of Burnham’s reported advisors from before he took power, endorse the Conservatives’ economic policy and a smaller state… giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

Geopolitics have changed, so why doesn't Andy Haldane recognise that fact ? We need to set the UK on a long term path to success, and not have even more short term tinkering.

There's a lot of absurd things here, but the naive ignorance of the idea that putting economic pressure on Russia would drive them *away* from the bargaining table is perhaps the most detached from reality. Real genius stuff from President Deals here.

Danish sovereignty and Greenlandic self-determination remain. The U.S.–Denmark–Greenland security agreement does not directly transfer full mineral ownership or direct mining rights to US. Denmark, Greenland and US must unanimously approve sensitive investments - so US has a veto power.
