Remember timeshare computers from the 70s? Nope? Amazon is glad you don't!

Right, I first heard it in the context of AWS back then. It took me way too long to figure out, oh, they mean renting time on Linux virtual machines!

Amazon put a fresh coat of paint on CGI scripts and called it Lambda. Get in loser, we're going "serverless"!

@1089thehawk.com That was a fun episode. Chicago classic rock stations have always played the live version of "Lights Out" for obvious reasons. I just checked their playlist, and 97.1 The Drive played it earlier today! "Lights Out" at 10am on a Monday? Sure why not.

A lot of my colleagues in software are already at the "I'm proud to not write code or even read or understand it" stage, where coding turns into a niche activity like churning your own butter. This might become true, and quickly! But where are we headed?

As the OP says the people behind the LLMs can put their fingers on the scale, but the LLMs themselves can too. Say you're starting a business that intends to disrupt a big incumbent. Is Claude going to give you the same level of service? Claude "knows" BigCo is spending more tokens than you…

If I were BigCo, I would pump excess tokens (none dare call it a bribe) just to keep the LLM on my side. That's not fair? What are you going to do, complain to the FTC? Have you seen who's in charge?

A rosy version of the future would offer multiple LLM options, many completely open source. But we know how tech consolidation usually goes. In this world, anyone who wants to make a computer do a thing–ANYTHING–has to pay the Claude tax. You may be happy paying that tax rather than dev salaries!

In Mancow's mind, the world would be better off if Hillary Clinton won the presidency in 2008, because that's what would have happened if Obama lost the Senate election in 2004 to Ditka

Rest in peace. Beautiful words

Obama was going to win that senate seat, whether it was to Jack Ryan (if he didn't drop) or Ditka, Ted Nugent, or WGN farm report guy Orion Samuelson (yes, they floated all these names). *Maybe* he would have lost to x-governor Jim Edgar (W apparently urged him to run) but even that's iffy.

I'm on a list of anti-AI people, but hear me out: I support (spiritually) the free LLM-generated Photoshop clone. If it can destroy Adobe's rental model, *and* the "I generated this with AI because I don't want to pay for Photoshop" excuse, it's not all bad?

"Full discography" does NOT include STRANGERS FROM THE UNIVERSE, FUNERAL PUDDING, ADMONISHING THE BISHOPS, TANGLE and others, but still worth it

$26 for their full digital discography? Do it! (tomorrow)

In another timeline, Larry did this as a duet with Linda Ronstadt, Streisand/Diamond-style (to bring Neil back into it)

a lot of folks are asking how someone can do something so "stupid" as hard coding a secret token, and i'm telling you that you are holding software developers and companies on way too high a pedestal if you still think there's secure, quality code being sent out into the world

Micah Lee@micahflee.com

HaJ3FgupAm8RrDJW3MHgT9X7Ft27eVaD What is that? That's a hard-coded API token that Flock cameras use to identify themselves and get OAuth credentials, which can then be used to talk to Flock's production servers. Like, anyone on the internet can probably do this right now.

I haven't paid *that* much to 1password or digitalocean over the years but it's fun to hear David Hamburger Helper getting a piece

if your bosses are making a thing that’s apparently going to kill people then literally what am i supposed to do that you don’t have more access to do? buy stocks?

What's the most cursed record in your collection? For me, it's this Dave Major & the Minors LP, signed by Dave himself. He would go on to murder two people, and die during a police shootout afterward.

$GOOG uses whatever names USGIS tells them! Their hands are tied! This remains true when an executive order renames it "Sundar Pichai Sucks Lake" It's the policy!
