I think it's telling that AI-pilled people on Bluesky think a filing that shows Anthropic isn't as much of a financial dumpster fire as we all thought will magically shut people like me up. Anthropic isn't the only player in this ecosystem and I still believe pushing this technology is immoral.

The literal difference between machine learning and generative AI. ML and related technologies are crushing it at numerical weather prediction.

Google DeepMind has proven to be an incredible tool and folks reflexively bashing it should read up on how beneficial it's been for forecasting.

1. Nvidia gets nailed for channel stuffing 2. GPU values go through the floor 3. Margin calls on all that debt that went into AI data centers because GPU values are going through the floor Two birds, one stone. Never forgive them for what they did to the computer.

Why did a human give Mythos a command to do that? One thing I know is computers are typically great at doing exactly what humans tell them to do. Aside: it also sounds a little like the xzutils backdoor a few years ago.

broadcasting is gonna be so back. Like yeah it’s ad supported but those ads aren’t sold by spying on you

Went to the movies earlier and saw Everything. Not sure why all the banners and posters and marquees and even the film’s title card were all telling me I could, I mean yeah I’m a sighted person with the money for the ticket and at least a modicum of reading comprehension so I figured as much

Oh dear all that is holy this is the WRONG ANSWER for a multitude of reasons I don't have the mental energy to expand on

nate@zzstoatzz.io

saw my dad's business' website was wordpress, so i told him to tell his IT guy to patch IT guy to my dad: "oh, this doesn't concern us, we use Linux"

I started with PHP in 2003 at the ripe age of 15. It opened so many doors for me.

djeikyb.bsky.social@djeikyb.bsky.social

php is a gateway into more programming. thirteen years old and all i knew was a bit of html and css and that httpd's server side includes weren't enough. LissaExplains.com taught me so much. respect for the path i walked even as i point others towards a different trail

If Abdul El-Sayed were ever elected president, would he be addressed as “Dr. President” instead of “Mr. President”? I think that would be pretty cool, personally

The internet as a thing (an interconnected network of networks) is in great shape and functioning as designed. I have no concerns about it. We lost our way, however, when we decided it was okay for a handful of companies to host just about everything on it.

Ken Tremendous@kentremendous.bsky.social

It's almost like we shouldn't let a small group of the most venal people on earth control the internet

This highlights the importance of organizing offline, or at least not depending on social platforms to distribute your message. Register a domain name and put up a web site. Only use socials to direct people there. If you don’t know how to do that, find a millennial. We had MySpace.

Brandon Friedman@brandonfriedman.bsky.social

Apparently at around 1:30 PM ET, the main accounts for the No Kings coalition on Instagram were frozen and pulled down. Admins have lost access to the account and are unable to log in. This happened at the peak of the organization's national day of action. Instagram, of course, is owned by Meta.

endorse. Your kids can use the crappy onboard DAC with their $2 earbuds and you can plug a headphone amp and cans worth about $2000 into the USB Type-C port.

If you enjoy listening to podcasts, you have Aaron Swartz to thank. RSS is a key underlying technology used for distributing them. Dude was a hero.

You mean to tell me I could have been pretending to be the government with the three-letter .me domain I've owned for 17 years??

being reminded by this post that I was in the band, then quit so I could join the academic team and then lettered in that. I played tuba. Then I slaughtered at the sport of Taking A Really Hard Science Exam And Also Playing Fake Jeopardy

Then I started hanging out with the nerds who were running all the A/V and computer stuff and oops now I’m an IT professional-turned-broadcast engineer

Fun fact: I have a scar in the palm of my right hand from cutting myself with an X-Acto knife while trying to build a balsa wood tower. I didn’t notice until I saw the pools of blood all over my desk.

Not only no culture, but no *commons*. The dependency on the capitalist overlords will be complete, because you can’t ask for help or context from others when there is no common frame of reference. This has already happened in coding, the first space where they destroyed the commons we’d all built.

union person@junlper.beer

this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted

To @anildash.com’s point the only reason most of those shitheads are at white house dinners is because -you- and people you know haven’t quit those platforms. If no one logs into X or Meta tomorrow they are done Make it happen

And may your god help you if you ever wanted to watch The Demented Cartoon Movie (~30 minute running time)

It should be embarrassing to folks how many “AI” or “agentic” implementations could be done using scheduled shell scripts and python. Automation is nothing new, folks.

The Anthropic terms of service update referenced in this excellent thread forced Microsoft to send an email to at least hundreds of thousands of people who manage Azure subscriptions notifying them of the change. I was one of those people.

Emily M. Bender@emilymbender.bsky.social

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment. I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this: >>

All I gotta say is that if Andy leans into channeling his inner Ossoff, y'all are gonna learn what righteous anger really looks like

Andy Beshear@andybeshearky.bsky.social

Given Trump’s belief we can rename things, I’m hereby changing “measles” to “RFK Jr.” because he’s the reason it still exists.

My wild hypothesis: Anthropic employees are chaos agents and they're desperately trying to blame the craziest shit on "rogue AI" to either cover for their collapse, force regulators to crack down and protect their business, or just convince everyone of their cult beliefs. Not sure which.

Stephanie Farr@farfarraway.bsky.social

Holy hell. Anthropic's AI model submitted a false tip about a HOMICIDE to the Philadelphia Police Department's online public tip form. The release today from the PPD:

Suddenly having immediate access to all the world's knowledge over the course of a typical human lifespan doesn't mean everything magically has a simple answer, explanation, or solution. I don't know what's worse: expecting that outcome, or assuming it's true.

It‘s jarring to see some people you’d never expect to have the ‘chosis show that they indeed have the ‘chosis. I don’t know whether to feel frustrated, angry, or just sad.

My lack of interest in AI stems from how I've structured my life around freedom and intentionality. I'm in the fortunate position that allows me to move slow and optimize for experience not productivity.

If the Unites States is going all in on ”SI”, well, I guess it‘s a good thing I’ve had my speedometer set to show km/h for over a year now.

As a bigger guy (both vertically and horizontally)... hoodie and shorts weather is the best.

Tyler Maun@tylermaun.com

Pushed the stroller while the wife walked the dog tonight. I went hoodie and shorts. Hoodie and shorts weather is a truly magical time of the year. And that walking party of four. What a dream.

All else aside, I think “blobdar” is an objectively delightful term and probably not far off from how weather laypeople perceive radar plots. (my phone also tried to autocorrect it four times, and it was something different each time)

It’s good to see Discord getting some well-deserved backlash, but the age verification is just the latest in a long string of reasons I refuse to touch it.

Drew Kirkman@drewkirkman.com

This is why things like Discord are bad for the internet. They’re event horizons for information that USED to be just published on the internet and easily searchable/discoverable.

I don't know how to put it nicely that people should have to put in a modicum of effort to learn to use technology and software and you shouldn't want it to treat you like a baby

In a way… he did name it after himself. “One Rich Arsehole Called Larry Ellison”

rickoughta.bsky.social@rickoughta.bsky.social

Ellison really should’ve named the company after himself instead of Oracle, considering. Douchebag Software was a perfectly acceptable name.

This; all of it. If you believe that people should be paid a fair and living wage for their work, but that doesn’t extend to journalists or others who create or curate informative or entertaining media, that’s a cognitive distortion you really need to address.

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

If you respond "paywall" to someone posting an article link, I'm going to block you in a heartbeat.

On some level, I just want us to collectively cut the tether and let these people get the reality check they so desperately need on their own schedule. My only worry is what they'll do once it comes... and it will come. PS: I'm a hater precisely because I'm good at what I do.

Dr. SkySkull@drskyskull.bsky.social

This is just a spectacular unintentional self-own

It’s also worth remembering that you can get high-resolution imagery from film just by scanning the print again with modern equipment. Film is analog; it has theoretically infinite image resolution.

This one won't get any further than stupid memes on the internet, because the Strait of Hormuz clearly falls outside the jurisdiction of the USGS. I am, however, looking forward to the absolute crash out when he tries and fails.

Matt Novak@paleofuture.bsky.social

The White House just posted this map showing the Strait of Hormuz renamed as "Trump Strait" to X.
