I was not informed by the BBC that they would have a right wing political figure or lobbyist on after me to rebut what I said. The individual in question went on to spout lies about China, etc. to distract attention from the Trump administration's assault on climate action. This is unacceptable.

Hey y’all, we have one week left to submit comments about The Regime implementing political review of grants, which would harm us all. For more information about submitting a comment or writing to your elected officials, Defend Public Health has a step by step guide for you right here.

defendpublichealth.orgCritical action needed: Stop OMB's political review of federal grants | Defend Public HealthA proposed rule from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) seeks to take expert review of federal grants out of the hands of experts and put it into the hands of political appointees. 1. There has been a major new federal rule proposed governing ALL federal grants. A federal grant recipient will be deemed ineligible if the recipient advances "gender ideology," or denies that "sex is binary." This includes hospitals, schools, nonprofits. Subscribe to support our journalism.

It should make Republicans *very* nervous to compare the listless unattendance of conservatives at CPAC this week with the enthusiastic, overwhelming attendance of liberals at #NoKings events a day later.

The purchase of CBS is similar to the acquisition of Twitter. This wasn’t a business decision but instead a political one to shift a major media property to the right. Losing ratings is an acceptable collateral damage to creating one less voice against the madness of MAGA.

I can understand that there may be other national priorities that push agendas and investment, but I want to be really clear that if science is your priority, the ONLY way to make good investments is to listen to the community of scientists about their priorities.

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted. What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards. Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.

Indeed. New grants are not getting funded, already funded grants are not getting paid, and non-competitive renewals are being held up. Focusing on the top line budget, instead of looking at what is really happening on “the ground” is deeply misguided.

Congress rejected massive cuts to US science budgets for 2026, but much of the money still isn’t flowing to researchers. The culprit? The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is quietly slow-walking the release of funds. 🧵👇

I know there are so many immediate threats against human life from the regime, that often the conversation about attacks on the environment get lost in the shuffle. Attacks on the Earth are an attack on her people. We are connected. It's the same fight.

These are the curves for new and competitive renewal grants. The number of new awards is increasing slightly, but only slightly. 17 out of 25 institutes and centers with funding authority have now made awards. 3/4

Someone on LinkedIn just asked me "why scientists should care and mobilize" right now. But the answer is simple: BECAUSE IT IS THE MORALLY RIGHT THING TO DO. People are being killed in the street, our democracy is being eroded, & we are watching the onset of authoritarianism before our eyes. 1/

It is utterly catastrophic that RFK Jr. plans to end CDC recommendations for most childhood vaccines. It’s a betrayal of science, ethics, compassion, and the people of the United States. And it was also a specific goal of Project 2025 (page 254).

RFK Jr. has cancelled grants to the American Academy of Pediatrics because “they no longer align with departmental priorities”. The grants were on such topics as “reducing sudden infant death, rural access to health care, and mental health…” The AAP has criticized RFK Jr. That’s the real reason.

Here’s the thing, emerging scientists aren’t going to flee to do science elsewhere…they just won’t do the science. We will lose at least one, if not two generations of knowledge if we don’t get this shit sorted out immediately.
