Where I used to work at a computer support desk in the 1990s, I put out a bowl of taffees for Hallowe'en, which I would offer before someone asked me a question. They caused so much extra saliva, making it difficult to talk, that the person often left without asking anything, which was the strategy.

So part of my industry is changing to a new standard in six months after years of committees and work. It's kind of telling when you're told "We've made these new rules, but we're going to be ignoring this sub-set of rules, and have written a separate set of rules for that part." ...

And the main reference document uses the most non-intuitive language and breaks concepts into little scattered pieces. Imagine looking up a word in a dictionary and needing to look up five other things to understand.

I love my dad but in his old age he can be ornery and difficult. We tried out a restaurant and he loudly complained about being given a table too near to music speakers. I mouthed "I am so sorry" to our server.

And surprisingly my mother had the audacity to complain that the bottle of ketchup on the table wasn't a Canadian brand. She tipped at the end, and as we headed out I tipped extra.

At my job I've had to take a course on AI. Teacher had real chutzpah at the end to propose that AI could help build better ways to clean air and water pollution or make more efficient energy grids.

Technically predictive AI might design more efficient things, but most AI use is theft and generative slop, and I see marketing hype and money being prioritized over civilizational betterment.

Finally tracked down and watched a Wonder Woman tv story from the late 1970s that I barely remembered. Nothing of importance was learned. It was fairly stupid, but at least now I have closure and know that it wasn't some fever dream.

RT if you've never had a tab of ChatGPT open, period. The only AI I 'use' is shit foisted on me - summaries and slop vomited on my screen as part of internet browsing or injected into programs I work with until I turn those settings off or rip those parts out by the roots.

1/ With the unveiling of the Thunderhead monument in Canada, I'm reminded of a gay friend in high school in Toronto in the late 1980s who was coming out of the closet. He wanted to write a school report on the Fruit Machine. Pre-Internet, pre-cellphone, he did his research at the library...

2/ Somehow, the RCMP took notice, found his phone number, and called him at home with a vaguely threatening "What do you think you're doing?" phone call. It was a softly terrifying reminder of State power. What a thing to do to a teenager.

I would like to see a French children's picture book called "Un matin à la ferme" that teaches about all the animals and their noises, with a grumpy farmer who can't sleep and shouts "LA FERME" at all their animals.

I love comedy, but creating good comedy is hard. Back in university I tried to write a long sketch based on game shows through history. Most of it wasn't good, but there was one joke I was happy with. The first game show (called "Game") was a Jeopardy parody...

And the game show host, awkwardly, introduces the two contestants. "Today first contestant is Gronk. So, Gronk, what you do?" - "Me push boulder off cliff onto buffalo!" - "And second contestant is Bloog. Bloog, what you do?" - (long, embarassed pause, ashamed) "...Me unemployed."

I was opening a carboard box on my desk, and the position of the box flaps let through a tiny point of light, resulting in a camera obsura showing my desk lamp's compact fluorescent lightbulb!

To my friends, wishing you all happy holidays and a happy new year! Take care of yourselves!
