Can’t believe this. Speaking plainly, and honestly. Finally addressing the issue head on, instead of skirting around it, pretending Brexit is fine. Finally.

🤩 This is a significant moment. Burnham says openly that Brexit has weakened 🇬🇧 economy, failed to deliver promised control over immigration and produced a harder Brexit than many people were led to expect in 2016. On rejoin EU: “I would like to see that happen in my lifetime.” And next 👇 🧵

Supermarkets round our way doing brisk business from the ‘Streeting shop.’ One lady with 6x 4 pints of fresh milk. Why? Maybe she was buying for a nursery - but semi-skimmed?!

Definitely from WWII. My dad used to tell a story about being back on leave and out with his mum and sister. They saw a queue and joined it. He said ‘what are we queuing for?’ They replied ‘don’t know, but it’s usually off ration and useful.’ My mum (WWII teenager) could also hoard for England.

Being a sentient person in 2026 means arguing in public for issues you never thought you would have to articulate out loud: "Read to your children yourself instead of outsourcing it to a robot!" "Don't televise executions!" Things like that.

Exactly. I’m mostly mixed French (Huguenot) Scottish, Irish and Scandinavian by DNA. Only my maternal grandmother’s side can be traced back to Anglo Saxon/Norman England. Besides which, it’s highly likely my Scottish ancestors were in the British Isles before hers.

Paul Garrard@paulgarrard.bsky.social

My surname originates in France. No idea if it came over with the Normans or the Huguenots. I actually don't greatly care. We are not our ancestors. The English are a mongrel nation looking for 'purity' is total ignorance as well as pointless.

Exactly 🎯 @bearlypolitics.co.uk wrote a great article for @eastangliabylines.co.uk explaining the advantages of immigration. Although immigration can create other problems at both ends , and is still only a short-term solution. The country should be having a grown up conversation about birth rates.

It’s a good question. It’s down to govt mismanagement. It was intended, in 1945, that each generation after the 1st would be paid out of a fund they’d paid into - National *Insurance*. But instead, each generation has paid the pensions of the one above, & successive govts gaslighted us about it

Burnham tells us Triple Lock must go because it's unsustainable. We’ve heard this before. Women’s pension age rose from 60 to 65, then pension age to 66 and now 67, then 68 - each time justified to keep pensions "sustainable". Why are people accepting this? #apathy #boiledfrogs

I would say the first step here is to ensure, to the extent you can, that children don’t have easy access to hard pornography. And that means personal phones that can just ring and text with very limited access to apps. Full access to the Internet on tablets and laptops through an adult log-in.

To be fair, most western governments are struggling with their pension burdens, because in most, state pensions don’t come out of savings, but taxation, and each generation after the boomers had less children so the % of retirees vs those of working age has grown steadily larger.

HMI visits were stressful. Because you wanted to show the school at its best. And it was a dialogue with, as you say Helen, recommendations for resources or even reading. When a HMI spoke you listened. Most OfSTED inspectors I’ve met haven’t exactly filled me with respect.

In fact, having worked with someone of limited teaching ability, knowledge and experience, who somehow managed to get a job as an inspector, my faith in the selection process hit zero. I would not have wanted this person inspecting amy school I was working in.

Why has anything to do with education only about schools now? It's hard to find anything about Early Education. EY settings have also been affected for years by OFSTED inspection carried out by inspectors who never worked with the under 5s? Have they forgotten the NOT so Bold Beginnings?

Totally agree bring back HMI & LAs and put the money into school not an inspection REGIME! Also so much money lots to schs with Academies!!! IMHO

No, get rid of OFSTED and go back to the HMIs @lucympowell.bsky.social They have been a cancer creeping through the fabric of education for decades. For which we must have paid billions by now.

HMIs were so knowledgeable and could recommend resources and training. It meant that inspections felt like a dialogue between professionals.

Yes!! Bring back HMI at least they had experience of teaching and had to give support. As a SEND specialist I really appreciated inspection by someone who wrote Advanced Maths books!

So .. I recall HMIs and LA inspection I'm.That old.... If we had Eric Bolton grade HMI And LA area based inspection with place based working .. And area based initiative.. We might just break free to real improvement.
