Climate.us is officially live!
After NOAA ended Climate.gov’s day-to-day operations in 2025, former team members built Climate.us to carry that work forward. Their explanations and graphics have always stood out to me as clear, accessible, and transparent. I’m really looking forward to this reboot.
Good news Friday! Scientists used their voice to alert to the many downsides of dismantling Ocean Observing Systems - and were heard!

🌊 Happy World Ocean Day!
From crashing waves along our coast to the deepest parts of the sea. From microscopic plankton to vast ocean currents. From student fieldwork aboard small boats to discoveries made on research vessels around the globe.
The ocean connects us all. 🌎 #WorldOceanDay
A new special collection welcomes articles that showcase the broad range of solutions-focused research & capacity-sharing efforts that meet the UN Ocean Decade's vision: "the science we need for the ocean we want."

It's a pleasure and an honor to be part of the ASLO awards. I can attest it's transformative for recipients, so think about your deserving colleagues, and nominate someone. Congratulations Dr. Grottoli and all honorees.
The Martin award was presented to Andréa G Grottoli et al. (2006) for fundamentally altering our understanding of coral nutrition and resilience in an era of climate change, representing a true paradigm shift in coral reef ecology.
Thanks to all who came to the ASLO-SIL closing plenary to honor Dr. Jan Amend, Dr. Sarah M. Collins and Dr. Beth Hundey.
It was hard to do but I would do it again and again to honor our friend and colleague.
Big hugs to you all,
Pete

At last - our Marvelous Montreal Meeting with SIL has launched! So glad to be here with everybody - largest attendance ASLO has seen at a summer meeting.
ASLO is in Montreal! We can’t wait to kick off the #ASLOSIL26 meeting with our partners @sil-limnology.bsky.social. The week will be full of innovative aquatic science research, networking, and social activities. Attendees - see you soon at the opening plenary and reception starting @ 17:00.
NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.
We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.
2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.
Please join me in recognizing and celebrating the honorees of this year's #ASLO awards. And thank you to award committee chairs Kateri Salk and Elizabeth Harvey.
Each year, #ASLO recognizes our colleagues for their outstanding achievements in #aquaticscience.
We are excited to announce the 2026 ASLO Award recipients - an exemplary group of scientists who are shaping #limnology and #oceanography.
👏 Congratulations: www.aslo.org/aslo-awards/...

Aquatic sciences are central to humanities well being. This piece stresses military dependence on scientific knowledge and there is so much more. Avoidance of loss of life on D-Day was new to me, as was the involvement of Walter Munk!

🌊 #URIGSO professor @drplankton.bsky.social joins a global team of experts to outline the many ways plankton (tiny, single-celled aquatic organisms) make life on Earth possible: from regulating climate and fueling ecosystems to advancing science, sustaining economies, and shaping culture. 🦑 🧪
Plankton make Earth habitable. Here a number of plankton experts, led by an early career colleague show (incl. in high quality images), why and how.

Two days remain to comment on the US FWS and NMFS rule change that undermines the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This proposal rescinds the definition of “harm,” limiting protections to actions that directly injure or kill listed species, leaving their habitats vulnerable. Please submit comments! 🧪
