Beyond Access from the @rsc.org shows access alone is not enough
Socioeconomic background shapes progression, belonging & outcomes in chemistry #ChemSky
Responsibility cannot sit with individuals to “overcome” structural barriers alone #BeyondAccess

‘If financial pressures deter talented people from pursuing chemistry and other scientific disciplines, there’s a risk of narrowing both the talent pipeline and its diversity. This, in turn, limits diversity of thought, reduces the range of experiences and perspectives.’
‘A generation of students feels betrayed by the establishment and the hidden inequalities embedded into this flawed system are now becoming apparent,’ writes Victoria Atkinson.

This week my Change 100 intern, presented her work on mentoring support for disabled chemists @rsc.org
Seeing her share her ideas with confidence was a powerful reminder: inclusion isn’t just about removing barriers. It’s about creating the access, networks and opportunities people need to thrive.
The @rsc.org “Beyond Access” report shows socioeconomic background shapes the UK chemistry pipeline from UG to early careers
Socioeconomic background is not a marginal factor, it is foundational #BeyondAccess#SEIinChemistry#ChemSky
Inequality is structural, not just access - rsc.li/beyond-access
A Royal Society of Chemistry report found that 37% of chemistry students came from higher socioeconomic backgrounds.

The report provides a strong foundation for meaningful co-design to challenge refine and implement the recommendations.
At the same time, high-quality evidence on the long-term career outcomes remains very limited. Addressing this gap will require collective effort across the sector.
What comes next is crucial. Success will mean moving from awareness to sustained, coordinated action so all chemical scientists can feel they belong and can progress and thrive, regardless of background #BeyondAccess#SEIinChemistry
