Dr. Wally | Let’s Human Together-Curious, Reflective, Vulnerable

I hold deeply humanist values, care for people over ideology, and I still won't accept either side deciding what counts as knowledge. Once one tribe controls that, the other stops trusting what it produces. We lose the language we need to even argue with each other. #HumanTogether

1/ Early voting opened today in Tennessee. Whatever your ballot looks like, this is the moment where showing up actually counts. #HumanTogether isn’t a slogan if it doesn’t include this.

4/ You don’t need to agree with your neighbor’s ballot to agree that both of you showing up is what makes the outcome legitimate. That’s a shared stake, not a partisan one.

2/ Every election cycle, someone claims the results can’t be trusted. The strongest answer to that isn’t an argument. It’s turnout so broad the claim doesn’t hold up.

A child somewhere is going to get sick from something we already knew how to prevent. Not because science and medicine failed. But because we’re seriously living through a campaign against knowing things … against expertise, against evidence. Children will pay that bill first. 🧵

Babies too young to be protected. Kids on chemo. Elders with tired immune systems. Neighbors with conditions you can’t see. They depend on the rest of us refusing to unlearn what it cost so much to know.

We love the story of the “resilient” child. It’s a comforting myth. But decades of developmental science, Ann Masten’s work especially, tells a different story: resilience isn’t a trait stashed inside a person. It’s what emerges when a person meets the right conditions. #HumanTogether 🧵

We need to reframe the question. Instead of asking “why isn’t this kid tougher?” we ask: what’s around them? What’s missing? A resilient child always has a resilient support system: a family member, a teacher, a neighbor, a community — doing quiet, steady work. #HumanTogether

Masten calls it “ordinary magic.” Not because resilience is rare or heroic, but because it shows up wherever the basic human systems are working: caring relationships, safe settings, chances to belong, adults who show up, institutions that hold. #HumanTogether

A kid can have 800 followers and no one to eat lunch with. That’s the world we built. We can build a different one.

The solution isn’t an app. It’s rebuilding the everyday spaces where people can be seen before they’re in crisis: schools, community orgs, mentorship, peer relationships. Places where showing up is the whole point.

Young people right now are growing up in institutions that are fragmenting, automating, and pulling back human care all at once. Connection is the first casualty.

What’s potentially happening tonight with Iran isn’t abstract. A leader threatening to erase a whole civilization should alarm every one of us, regardless of where we stand politically. 🧵

It’s a long weekend. For many, a sacred one. And yet the news doesn’t pause, the anxiety doesn’t pause, the weight doesn’t pause. 🧵

We’re expected to rest and stay informed and show up Monday like none of it happened: present, productive, whole.

We were never meant to do this alone. Connection isn’t a luxury or a personality trait. It’s a biological need. Here’s what psychology tells us about why — and what happens when that need goes unmet: 🧵

Trauma-informed practice taught me this: most of what we call ‘difficult behavior’ is actually disconnection in disguise. People don’t act out, they reach out. Imperfectly. Desperately. But they’re reaching.

Loneliness isn’t just an emotion. Research consistently shows it activates the same brain regions as physical pain. When we feel disconnected, we are genuinely hurting — not being dramatic, not being weak. Hurting.
