New piece in The Conversation where we argue that the mis- and disinformation around #vaccines is bad for our #autonomy. If we really value free and autonomous choices, then from a policy perspective it means doing what we can to fix the information environment in which we make our decisions!

theconversation.comVaccine mis- and disinformation isn’t just a threat to public health, but also to our autonomyWhen we are mis- or disinformed, it is difficult to act with autonomy. We may make decisions that do not align with our beliefs, even when we seem to be acting voluntarily.

Was at the Australia athletics national meet this weekend. First time at a track and field comp of that caliber. Lemme tell ya, it’s so rad! Also, I don’t know that I could make it half way down the track in 100m in the time hurdler runs and jumps 100m. That’s some humbling shit right there.

Let’s not pretend Australian right wing politicians aren’t as rhetorically/morally depraved as elsewhere in the world (not that anyone reading this thread is likely guilty of this)

Temporary exclusion orders - didn’t know this was a thing in Australia (that an Australian citizen can be bared from re-entering the country if they’re a safety/terror threat). I can’t find a data on how often this has happened/happens. Anyone know if one can find said data anywhere?

I’ve really been struggling since the US invaded Venezuela to make sense of what’s happening (emotionally, I get it from a ‘realist’, post rules-based viewpoint). As a Latino, it's impossible not to think about the history of 1970s, and the personal stories I heard growing up, of right-wing (cont)

Yo te llevo dentro, hasta la raíz Y por más que crezca, vas a estar aquí Aunque yo me oculte tras la montaña Y encuentre un campo lleno de caña No habrá manera, mi rayo de Luna Que tú te vayas

Although I agree with her, I struggle to internalise this message, to fight hate without becoming hateful, fight violence without becoming violent. I find myself weak in the face of hate.

That said, I do question the limits of the argument. When does the violence become unbearable and must be met in kind? Can there be physical resistance without violence? And the notion of (group) self defence -what of it? Still, I will be giving my students this to read in week one of Moral Theory

of rebellion, hope, struggle, faith. Some classic tunes, others more recent. Not sure who reads my posts, but in case it’s of any help - and I do feel I turn to art in these dark moments for respite - I’ll post a song periodically with some lyrics that stand out for me.

authoritarian governments propped up by the US and US corporations. (Here’s a good time to note that despite being agnostic, I do want to believe in an afterlife, if only for Kissinger to be held to divine justice). I find myself listening to a lot of music from Latin America. Songs of protest,

A very good read.

I’ve been writing an annual column for 20 years on the year in sports and politics. Here’s this year’s edition. Short version: 2025 was the fucking worst. But maybe 2026 sees a turnaround that’s already being glimpsed in unlikely places www.thenation.com/article/soci...
