In contrast, the science of consciousness advances by contrasting conscious and unconscious processing, implicating various functions. Whether these require biological detail is an empirical question, not one to settle in advance www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

I'm very excited about this recent study, led by @pieterbarkema.bsky.social. We find that stimulus representations in the deep layers of V1 can be affected by *later* information: postdiction. See Pieter's thread for more information - and of course the preprint! @jhaarsma.bsky.social #neuroskyence

biorxiv.orgThe post-hoc montage of perception: deep layers of primary visual cortex encode postdictive perceptsOne of the most puzzling aspects of perception is postdiction: later information can change how a previous stimulus is perceived [1,2]. This indicates that perception is not a livestream of the extern...
Pieter Barkema@pieterbarkema.bsky.social

What you see right now is not a livestream, but is delayed & edited by your brain 🧠. The brain uses a short time buffer to rewrite what you thought you saw using info that comes in later (postdiction). We study how (7T fMRI, retinotopy). Read our preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... 👀 (1/N)

👉 In this new #pupillometry #preprint 👈 @veerahelmisofia.bsky.social shows that correlations between visual detection performance and pupil size may often be due more to optics than (as often assumed) arousal. #psychology #perception #neuroscience

Veera Ruuskanen@veerahelmisofia.bsky.social

✨ New preprint ✨ With @cogsci.nl we show that larger pupils provide an advantage for near-threshold detection in the visual domain but not in the auditory domain 👀👂 We suggest that this effect is driven by optics 💡 (in addition to arousal ⚡) Check it out! ⬇️ www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Check out this thread - and please RT 🙏 Shaked and Itay argue that t-test and LMMs (and their Bayesian parallels) are not adequate for testing chance performance, and suggest alternative, more powerful tests. We hope you will find this useful, especially when studying unconscious processes

shakedlublinsky.bsky.social@shakedlublinsky.bsky.social

Can we make objective awareness tests more powerful? In our new paper (doi.org/10.1093/nc/n...; Neuroscience of Consciousness), we introduce two tests (frequentist and Bayesian) that outperform commonly used tests, based on extensive simulations and reanalyses of published datasets. (1/9)

PSA for trainees cold emailing with interest in joining a lab: Be careful about your use of LLMs in writing these emails!! It is now *extremely* common to get emails with a bizarrely-detailed, clearly-LLM take on a paper finding or with specific phrases pulled from the lab website. Don’t do this!

New paper: "Introspection and Scientific Data" for the Handbook of Introspection, about the role of introspection in the production of scientific data. My view: introspection doesn't deliver a special 'subjective' kind of data and there's nothing special about studying consciousness.

Exciting news, I just gave a talk on how two heads can be better than one... even in children! 🧠👧👦 Very grateful for the kids, that are the heart of this project, the parents who believed in this research from the start, and to the teachers. Here's to the power of collaboration, at every age! 🙌
