Fantastic new paper by @rtakatsky.bsky.social 👇

Ryota Takatsuki@rtakatsky.bsky.social

This work was done with Tomoki Doi, Amane Watahiki, @anilseth.bsky.social, and Hitomi Yanaka. Huge thanks to everyone involved! 📄 Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2609.13254 💻 Code: github.com/rtakatsky/ml... (3/3)

My main concern here is that what counts as “intelligence” is radically broad, covering “…doing, or performing functions” Any capacity measurable by cog sci is thereby written off, however closely it instantiates properties associated with human consciousness AI consciousness is ruled out by fiat

In contrast, the science of consciousness advances by contrasting conscious and unconscious processing, implicating various functions. Whether these require biological detail is an empirical question, not one to settle in advance www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Kevin (who is on Bsky!) has done a really amazing work here. The package brings a lot of flexibility and precision to models of metacognition, and will become the new standard!

Kevin O’Neill@kevingoneill.github.io

happy to announce the official release of my first R package on CRAN! 🎉 building on the Hmetad toolbox by @smfleming.bsky.social, the hmetad package allows users to fit the meta-d' model of confidence ratings using a familiar brms/lme4-style formula syntax

Useful thread about how to navigate the (rapidly changing) threat of bots in online behavioural studies. A move to unpaid citizen science platforms might end up being the best long-term strategy here

Andrey Chetverikov@achetverikov.bsky.social

Some months ago, I wrote a skeptical reply to a commentary on bots in online studies in PNAS, arguing that no evidence yet exists for such bots. Together with the authors of the original commentary, we now show that bots can pass (almost?) all online cognitive studies with human-like performance 1/n

Steve Fleming reposted

How much of a risk are LLM-generated bots for online behavioral experiments? We present results of an entirely natural language prompt-generated agent, capable of absolving any of the 26 experiments we tested it on. Most tasks are passed with data that can pass as human osf.io/preprints/ps... (1/)

The Appeal of (Semi-?) Biological Naturalism [link in thread] Biological naturalism about consciousness will, I predict, soon be hot. As AI systems start to look more and more like conscious or sentient entities, at least superficially, doubters will be increasingly drawn to 1/3

Recently ran a prolific study asking ppts to describe images in <20 words. With 50 captions per person, we were able to pass each participant’s full text into Pangram. It detected 2 out of 200 with high confidence as fully AI, and about 6/7 others as borderline AI/human. FWIW :)

I’m very grateful to @smfleming.bsky.social for his supervision and @kevingoneill.github.io for a great collaboration. We show that the PE bias in confidence judgments can be a Bayes-optimal consequence of inference in high-dimensional spaces, and in CNNs, the bias also increases with dimensionality

An important new paper from the lab : in a few years, vision models have progressed to such an extent that they almost match human perception in the domain of geometry (but may still fall short of having a genuine language of shapes).

Maxence Pajot@maxencepajot.bsky.social

New AI models now show incredible math skill, solving problems that had stumped mathematicians for years. But what about basic geometric abilities? In our new paper in PLOS Computational Biology, we investigate this in vision models: doi.org/10.1371/jour... 1/8
