washington memorial, 2027 park ranger 1: well, it's been ten years since the Spider-Man incident, but the repairs are finally done. she's back to her old glory park ranger 2: [starting at phone] hey, you watching the press conference from the rose garden? something's going weird with Ross

it's not even that it's an objectively bad idea, it's just that I feel like "preparing the UK" for various crises is the sort of thing I expect the government to do. it's pretty much top of the list of things I'm looking for.

Britons should use money we haven't got to buy food the country doesn't grow, store it in homes that don't exist, in spare rooms that got taxed away, so we can survive when reservoirs nobody built run dry because of a climate the govt won't protect. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

govt: there's crises on the way, can you stockpile food and water? me: sure, i'll get on that, any chance you've got any plans? govt: we got you, we're going to gaslight people with ADHD that they don't exist and demonise trans people and migrants me: but nothing about the crises? govt: ...?

"How did you get into tabletop role-playing games?" Nine or ten years old, a friend's older brother at school ran a Basic D&D game. I got handed a character sheet for a level 1 Magic-User(!). I had no idea what I was doing. Halfway through the session someone shouted "Cast Magic Missile!"

"How did you get into tabletop role-playing games?" 1988. I was 19, at Uni, and knew about D&D tho' had never played. My then BF ran a one-shot for he and I, then introduced me to his gaming group. I statted a cleric, who later got reincarnated a minotaur, then an Irda for a DragonLance campaign.

funny thing is, yachts just aren't very practical things to own. they're not a particularly fast way to get around, and using them for leisure sort of demands a lot of free time. the attraction is basically that they're very, very expensive, more so than almost any other very, very expensive thing.

everything about the existence of billionaires is gross, but this may be the grossest thing. something appallingly, unimaginably expensive, something that couldn't exist until something called a "billionaire" existed, and which is nonetheless too impractical even for billionaires to really use them.

it's the apotheosis of conspicuous consumption. even a small luxury yacht runs to the tens of millions; the most spectacular ones are pretty much the only consumer product that actually trips over to ten figures. billionaires like luxury yachts because you have to a billionaire to buy one.

#VampiretheMasquerade game last night: pc: were you given a choice? scary npc: no, I was a weapon like you. I was made in the Spanish civil war. (rapturously) I drank deep of fascist blood player: ...i'm trying to disapprove gm: right? like, *mas murder... but fascists... but mass murder..."

Whip it is about Elliot Page's character learning to bond with his dad over their shared love of sports, not roller derby.

If people can retcon The Matrix to be about transfeminine awakening, Whip It is definitely about a transmasc family negotiation.

There are a bunch of reasons for this, including that we limit access to services for recent migrants, but the main one is that most immigrants are healthy young adults who immediately join the workforce, and therefore consume neither education/childcare nor welfare provision until retirement.

There is, of course, huge variation in individuals - those pesky Europeans the country to get rid of in 2016 were *massive* net contributors, for instance - and there are certainly immigrants who are net beneficiaries, but as a rule immigrants pay out more and get less.

That is, the average amount of tax that an immigrant will pay throughout their lives in the UK exceeds the amount they draw from public services, while the average tax that a British-born national will pay is less than the total amount they draw.
