The worst thing about Bioware shutting down is the shitty treatment of the people working for it. But also it's becoming clear that they had assembled an absolutely elite team of modern science fiction writers to write the next Mass Effect game, and man it hurts that we'll never get to see it.

Derek Kunsken@derekkunsken.bsky.social

Meeting @catvalente.bsky.social and working with her to pitch story and character and lore and #scifi wonder for this next chapter of the Mass Effect world was the most energizing, in-the-zone collaboration I've ever had. 4/6

did not have "inaugural pick for a book club featured on NHL dot com" on my author bingo card, but HERE WE ARE 🏒

Fun fact: The Incandescent started life as ‘the first enchanter and the knight commander of the templars in the circle tower section of dragon age origins should have kissed. also, they should both be women.‘

which is to say: BioWare have given an extraordinarily generous range of inspiration and delight to us all for the last thirty years. I’m sorry to see it end.

Also: Dragon Age 2 is an incredible video game that took storytelling swings no one else was even considering in 2011, had one of the best ensembles in any medium, and was a goddamn feat of development that got made in A YEAR AND 4 MONTHS. Haters can get bent, Kirkwall 4 life

And I'LL weave 13 miles of rope And I'LL weave 14 miles more free Just to BE the man who wove authentic ROPE for Captain Jack Aubrey

Michael Stahlke@michaelstahlke.bsky.social

There were 27 miles of rope used for rigging in Master & Commander. Modern rope naturally coils in the opposite direction of rope made during the Napoleonic wars. So the production paid a shop to make period accurate cordage.

I'm onto the most recent Singing Hills book now and they really are perfect. Another writer might be tempted by serialisation and success to start sprawling in all directions, but these are all crisp, focused, and precise. Nghi Vo understands novellas.

Emily Tesh@emilytesh.net

Books are so good when they’re good. I hadn’t reread Nghi Vo’s Empress of Salt and Fortune in about a decade. It’s even better than I remember, AND there’s a whole series now.

I read once an essay by (I am almost certain) C.S. Lewis, on Homer as hellscape. It certainly seems like the kind of thing Lewis would write. But I can't find it now and I want it and I'm losing my mind.

Hugo for Best Book That Can Hold The Picnic Blanket Down Even When It's Really Windy as opposed to Hugo for Best Book That Can Fit In A Pocket Even After Taking Unequal And Patriarchal Pocket-Distribution Into Account

The new Hugo categories will continue until morale* improves. *morale of Hugo Administrators will not be considered for this metric.

I think I'm onto something.

Emily Tesh@emilytesh.net

pondering this further: I would like to propose a new award category. 'Novel' now covers books from 40k to 140k, and the 'novel grosso' (or 'chonker') is any book longer than that.

Books are so good when they’re good. I hadn’t reread Nghi Vo’s Empress of Salt and Fortune in about a decade. It’s even better than I remember, AND there’s a whole series now.

(looked this up. NOT a decade. six years. it came out in 2020. however I did have two children since I read it last which might explain the subjective time distortion. anyway the next book with the tiger demons is also extremely good.)

I said it and I meant it.

Thank you to @emilytesh.net for this great blurb for Yoon Ha Lee's "spectacular return to Space Opera" - CODE AND CODEX! A vast SF epic about the power of language and censorship by the bestselling author of NINEFOX GAMBIT! UK release - March 2027. Preorder now: geni.us/codecodex

must issue a tragic correction: out this month if you're in the US. not out till February in the UK. heartbreaking news for my people.

Emily Tesh@emilytesh.net

just finished reading Code and Codex by Yoon Ha Lee (new! Yoon Ha Lee! space opera! out this month!) and man. no one else does the combination of indulgent (complimentary) and very, very clever quite so well.

Wow! Texts are super rare for the Hittites, basically there’s just one archive and it’s 95% lists of prayer sacrifices to mountain gods, so this is really, really exciting!

Sarah E. Bond@sarahebond.bsky.social

184 new cuneiform tablets ✍️ (total), dating to c.1400 BCE. “Preliminary examination of the texts has revealed references to military activities, epidemics, the death of an infant princess & requests for assistance sent to the king by Hittite military commanders” www.heritagedaily.com/2026/10/184-...

Lee like: listen. evil space wizard empress and her core gang of minions. all of them are outrageously hot. all of them are in Some kind of current or former sexy situation. at least one is a traitor, at least one has been in prison for a thousand years, at least one is possibly a spaceship.

our protag is the oathsworn sibling-lover-champion of the empress who gets his/her gender forcibly changed according to what empress thinks is convenient or fun. a cute cat with wings is here. Have You Got All That. okay good. language is the first and purest weapon of imperial domination.

Had a really great time chatting (and chatting, and chatting some more) with Casella about the Le Guin Prize shortlist. Honestly I could easily have gone on longer; it’s a list with a lot to discuss, in a great way.

THE SEVENTH BANISHER by A K Larkwood has Knives Out meets Lovecraft meets Gideon the Ninth vibes with a bunch of terrible but fascinating people trapped on an isolated island murdering their way through mind-blowing plot twists on a creepy magical mansion (out in March): bookshop.org/p/books/the-...

it has now been two months of suddenly having my reading mojo back. I have read or reread twenty-nine books. I can now share such revelations as 'it's been 13 years but Ancillary Justice is still a perfect book' and 'has anyone else heard of this Tchaikovsky chap?'

Emily Tesh@emilytesh.net

from 2014 to 2023 when I worked in education, I more or less stopped reading for pleasure. when you get a passion job, it eats your passions. it’s only this year it’s really started to come back.

the two lengths of SFF novella are 'ok fine I'll make it just long enough to be hugo eligible' and 'ok fine I'll make it just short enough to be hugo eligible'

it's simply impossible to write a book. there's no way. it can't be done. stop trying to trick me into - [eats lunch] turns out books are made of scrambled eggs.

SORCERER OF THE WILDEEPS by Kai Ashante Wilson is a fantasy novella with awesome worldbuilding, a queer love story, and beautiful writing. If you ever wanted to see dialects like African American Vernacular done well in a fantasy setting, this is your book. It's so good.

I have been reading the Anne McCaffrey Pern novels for the first time yeah I don't know why I hadn't read them before and I don't know why I'm inhaling them so fast now BUT importantly I know they're not trying to actually do linguistic worldbuilding but BOY do I have linguistics thoughts anyway
