It has been a very convention-centric weekend, with a ton of preparation going on Friday and Saturday. I contributed a small part, at least, but also provided a lot of moral support. There were meetings today and closing the loop on some outstanding deliverables. I'm tired but feeling pretty good.

One year ago today, I had to say goodbye to my beautiful boy, Charlie. I miss him every day. I'm often asked if or when I'm going to get another dog, and I honestly don't know. I'm still dealing with a lot of emotional trauma from losing him and I don't know if I'm prepared to deal with that again.

Cozy - Just Alex and Gabe in werewolf form having a cozy Autumn evening in a secluded cabin in the woods

Review: Spatially UnawareWolf by Sarah Honey. Terrible title and cover aside, this quick and breezy book addresses asks: If you're suddenly a werewolf, how does you brain reconcile coordination between the two bodies? Worth a read for the occasional laugh-out-loud digressions. Rating: 4 out of 5.

Over the last few days I've spent way too much time researching all kinds of information on Tenerife for my vacation in mid-December, but perhaps I should focus on the trainload of stuff that needs to happen before that trip. For one thing, I hear there's some convention or something coming up.

That said, if anyone has suggestions of places to check out in La Laguna or Santa Cruz, let me know. And on the off chance there's any furries there who want to meet up over a beer/coffee, that would be awesome!

Goal for next month: Actually take some knitting classes so I can restart my interest in it. I've been limping along with YouTube videos and that just isn't cutting it. I've found a place less than a half-hour from me that offers Beginning Knitting, so I just need to stop by there and sign up.

I just dropped off medical equipment I don't need any more (crutches, shower bench, walker, etc.) with a local township that lends these out to those in need of it. The staff there were really nice, and so appreciative. I got the feeling there is an urgent need and this will all be put to good use.

I can now walk a mile at a time and not have too much pain. Balance exercises are killing me tho: Standing on a foam pad, put heel to toe, hold for 30 sec. Repeat 5 times, then switch. Then balance on the bad leg for 30 sec, repeat 5 times. I've yet to make it through 5 reps of standing on one leg.

WIP I'm chipping away at of an animatic of Wile tooning along to the bridge of Weird Al's "Hardware Store"! Maybe I'm late, but in hindsight, the contents of a hardware store really do seem to go hand-in-hand with a toon's bag of tricks xD #Weirdal #wileecoyote #hardwarestore

This is my last weekend with no plans until, um, January? Holy hell. I intend to spend today doing very little. Maybe run a few errands, do some grocery shopping, and generally try to get out to enjoy the beautiful fall weather!

I need to brush up on Spanish, or at least train myself not to pronounce Spanish words with a French pronunciations. At least I can now pronounce Costa Adeje (after a couple of tries) so that's a start?

And because I won't be traveling enough, I just nailed down flights and hotel for Further Confusion, from Thursday to Monday. See y'all there! (And good lord, I'm realizing that between December and mid-January I'll be traveling for four out of six weeks.)

Yesterday's big travel decision: I’d mentioned spending Christmas in Portland/Seattle, but I wanted someplace new…and warmer. I’ve been curious about visiting the Canary Islands, then stumbled on a 10-day cruise over Christmas with a surprisingly cheap solo fare. I’m off to Tenerife December 12-28!

The ship is the Windstar Wind Spirit, a 148-passenger ship with sails. Compared to the 2,000+passenger ships I’m used to, this will be quite an experience. The itinerary goes all around the Canaries with Christmas in Madeira. I’m stepping outside my comfort zone going solo, so we’ll see how it goes!

I'm on the cusp of a Big Travel Decision, and I'm going back and forth on the pros and cons. Really, it's coming down to 'how much would I regret not taking this opportunity?' and that is way more compelling than I thought it would be.

Day 15: complete an unfinished piece #oc_tober2026 I started this piece this summer after seeing Norman Rockwell’s triple self portrait as a print at a summer house! Got busy and didn’t take the time to finish it until last weekend ⭐️

Over the last two years, FuzzyFin has shown smart leadership, communication, and compassion as chair, evolving the role into something unique and beneficial to the organization. It's been a pleasure to work with her! Plus, she puts up with my snarky, curmudgeonly shit, so there's that 🙂

The board of Midwest Furry Fandom is happy to announce that FuzzyFin will be staying on as chair for Midwest Furry Fandom 2027. Her dedication and hard work over the last two years is very appreciated, and we look forward to great things in the coming year! 🦝

I've started to get up earlier so I have time to get in some walking before work. I can do a mile around my neighborhood easily, it's just that for the next hour or so afterward I'm hobbling around like a 90-year-old. I'm thinking I need to reconsider my approach.

This story is simply stunning, punctuated with photos and video clips from Steffan's journey. It's incredibly well-written as well, deeply moving and thought-provoking. (Gift link: www.nytimes.com/interactive/...)

It’s been such an honor to work on this story for the past 5 months. A young Norwegian, Steffen, was trying to cross Canada on foot and with sled dogs. His dogs survived; tragically, he did not. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Good: Lots of great exercise walking around today! Almost 5 miles total. Bad: Hobbling out of the car once I got home, with my ankle informing me exactly how little it appreciated all that walking. Ibuprofen, an ice pack, and elevating the ankle should help some, at least.

I've got to say, of the three places I've been today, I like the vibe at Hop District the best. Friendly bartender, clearly a lot of the clientele are regulars. Obviously I visit a ton of breweries, and as long as the beer is passable, I judge a place by its vibe. Would I want to hang out there?

I spent this morning I spent gathering info on all of the parking garages around the DESCC. It will help attendees a lot, but damn - I have trashed my ankle something fierce. I had hoped to stick around Chicago for dinner and maybe more, but I think I'm heading home from here.

Well! It appears I'll be in Chicago tomorrow afternoon with no plans. My default is visiting one of the (many) new-to-me breweries in town, but gimme a shout if you want to meet up over a drink or lunch/dinner.

This has been rough week. I've been spending a lot of time on unpaid work to the detriment of paid work, but the fact that I've been noodling around ideas for future travel as well tells you where my head is at. Deal with the difficult present by creating a future to look forward to, I suppose?
