I downloaded Chromium, tried to use the keyboard shortcut to switch to a mobile emulation view, and instead got the profile menu. LET ME OPEN THE MOBILE VIEW, NOT YOUR STUPID BROWSER PROFILES! I can't even find a way to disable the profile or prioritize the dev tools shortcut. Ugh.

Maybe I should have at least some kind of Chromium-based browser to test my site on. I don't think I can really test like desktop Safari, but I do have my phone for that.

As I was typing this out, I discovered that the shortcut in fact *does* work... only if you're in the dev tools. I don't know why it wouldn't just let me see it without dev tools, Firefox can do it...

I've got a loooooong road ahead of me for improving the CSS on my website. It's like half-modernized.

I still need a color palette, better accessibility, consistent spacing, improved organization, more thoughtful approaches to specificity, etc.

I also made some accessibility and metadata improvements recently. Someday I'll probably design my own preview image, but this image is one I've liked for a while and is public domain. I may also want thumbnails or pictures for blog posts, but who knows.

It is very satisfying to feel like I've contributed to collective, free knowledge when I update various Wikimedia Foundation projects and OpenStreetMap. Personal knowledge management is fun but sharing it is even more fun.

If only more of these personal knowledge management folks would contribute to publicly available and freely licensed information more.

Granted, it's not my best work ever, but I'd rather get this out of my drafts than let it sit and die to the very same mechanism it tries to criticize.

Upon closer inspection, the results all came from external indexes. It also seems to fluctuate; it gave around 11 results yesterday and only 5 today. Interesting.

One thing that's impressed me about @kagi.com is how my most recent blog post shows up in their search results even when I posted it a day before. The speed is ridiculous and unexpected to me. Maybe I got lucky and it indexed my site just after I posted, I don't know. Good work though.

The metadata for publish dates is sometimes missing though :< Maybe it's because those posts had their metadata indexed before I included it in the head.

My bigger issue with this criticism is that it's not really an Obsidian-specific thing. The more you specialize and make use of one app's idiosyncrasies and features, the less portable that data becomes. It's a good thing to keep in mind as a user, and probably a caveat I'll need to note in my post.

So be conscious of how deeper use of something will impact portability. Most of my files could be easily exported, but my dictionary files rely a lot more on weird custom formatting and styles. If you value portability above all, maybe you should just use straight .txt files.

Need to write this as an addendum at some point but for now I'll put it here. I talked a bit about how the format is open and easily portable to other apps, but some have criticized this point with Obsidian before.

I do note that plugin-specific syntax can be an issue if you want to port your data over, but even certain Markdown syntax may not work everywhere since there isn't really one standard. That said, Markdown is still widely understood and it'll probably just be display errors for unrecognized formats.

Deadlock added an old jamaican guy whose kit is a complex combination of actual chess moves that shoot you and it's now surpassed Team Fortress 2's all time peak players, all while you still need an invite to play. Valve is winning game of the year in permanent alpha phase

I haven't shared too much about my Obsidian vault but I do keep a pretty light dictionary to myself. It's not perfect and I'm no lexicographer, but it is fun to make these entries :3

Was hoping to make a new blog post yesterday and ended up just making some updates to the interface again. Now article lists show a description/subtitle so you get a better idea of what I'm actually talking about, and my footer looks better.

I also finally updated my daily note template in Obsidian to use the note title as the reference date for all of the date variables I use, so I can backfill daily notes without needing to fix all of the date variables outputting the current time.

Recently contacted a mapper on OSM named SD-Mapper (who, as you might guess, primarily maps South Dakota) with some questions. He gave some helpful answers and seems likely a lovely fellow. Maybe I ought to get in touch with him sometime.

Thought I'd play around colorful accents for my sona, since it was mostly gray before. Could be refined but it seems nice :3

I might have to make a blog post or something about the German word "Hausnummer" sometime because it has a surprising amount of figurative meaning. It also has an interesting origin since house numbering was not widespread in Europe until the 18th century.

I found out about this today. It seems pretty cool. I really ought to contribute to Wiktionary more.

So Internet Archive, Open Street Map, and Zenodo all currently getting hammered by fucking AI bots. Core pieces of research infrastructure under threat. And those of us trying to keep resources online for the public become the unpaid servants of the mega-rich AI shysters.

Part of me is very concerned at the idea that paying anything to some app could then be used to subsidize or fund generative AI. I know that I don't really get to choose how my money is spent on a piece of software, but seeing apps announce new AI features knowing I partly subsidized it feels bad.

how else would conveyer belts be powered? we all know there's a big factory somewhere that connects to all other conveyer belts and has its workers walk on the belts to get them moving in every factory
