This is how I see the anti-AI craze (in gaming) die, not with a bang but with a whimper, as more and more people find out they have enjoyed the “poisoned fruit” already and it wasn’t so bad after all

Blizzard suddenly seeming to REALLY care about Warcraft III & Heroes of the Storm again was not coincidental

I think someone could write an interesting article about how Russia benefits tremendously from "white privilege" on the world scene. Look at the difference in how Trump treats Russia vs. Mexico when they are really pretty much peer countries in population and per-capita GDP.

it is, entirely and completely, just an attempt at riling people up. matt darling is just a troll who gets off on being pointlessly annoying and insensitive. there's no factual or rational basis to the things he says.

to be statted up to Magic cards - and with a draftable environment you can utilise some of them as bit players in limited, whilst others get to be fancy Commander and Standard plants. 40k gives us a rich tapestry of varied war that isnt simply "man in kitchen" or "that super hero, again". /4

After a lot of systems architecture bullshit, there is finally language switching in Esoteric Ebb. Only available on the Open Beta Localization Branch for now, but feel free to test it out!

it simply isn't viable to continue acting as if there are not substantial downsides to making people who steadfastly refuse to engage with the social contract the primary beneficiaries of it

I hope that Mr Rossignol will write something better than mediocre eventually. Three attempts and not quite over that hurdle. He is a master at figuring out an interesting concept and then executing it in the most boring and linear fashion.

Or you can write a short story. Setup a situation and interesting characters in such a way that you can deliver a twist or a point or a punchline or whatever you want to call it at the end of it. This one is hard to do so people go for the first one basically always.

But to actually pull that off you need to run it like a video game you need to use interesting mechanics and challenges, you need to use your set pieces to their fullest and you need to center the player character as much as possible. At all of these points the ES fails.

And this is the pattern for all three exceptional stories, I am interested at the very start of them, hopeful and excited. And then I get bored. There are two basic ways you can write an ES, either as a videogame story or as a short story.

Videogame stories used in an extremely broad sense are scene, set piece and mechanics delivery tools. They are structured so you move from hopefully interesting gameplay sequence to story sequence to exploration sequence and so on. (This is extremely reductive)

He is either unable or not allowed to use mechanical aspects of the wider game. Extremely low on tie-ins amd without any actual mechanical challenges. The current story almost begs for a couple of novel burdens or at least some wounds manipulation. Yet that is absent.

It is heartbreaking and infuriating in equal measure to see my friend try to improve her life again and again and again only for those avenues to be blocked again and again and again, in no small part due to the influence of her rapist.

The neat thing is that you cannot criticize DE on how it treats gender and feminism as it has iirc basically nothing to say about them. How Harry feels about women is not a thing the game cares about beyond the laughable "overt misogyny is fascism and by doing you accrue fascism points".

Disco Elysium is pretty directly inspired by The Shield which can then trace it's ancestry through cop/detective media back to the same westerns that inspired DND. Hell DE is much closer to this concept than EE, one of the climactic scenes is literally a shootout before the doors of Saloon!

The reason why DE works is that it's a cop/western/whatever show. Well written one with a couple of twists but the basic arc is still there, firmly imbeded in the framework of a Texas ranger bringing order to a distant lawless border town.

I wish somebody applied the same level of scrutiny that is applied to Esoteric Ebb to Disco Elysium. Because Disco Elysium is a shittier game from the actual systems and you know the game aspects wise with some very specific bugbears politics wise.

There is this thought that keeps bouncing in my head. So large part of Peter Watts literary work is that any system capable of housing consciousness can only host one, no matter the amount of constituent parts, if he bandwidth between the parts is high enough.

with two bodies, your consciousness isn't presumably based on a discussion between the hemispheres and hive mind doesn't allow conscious discussions between the brains. The main problem is who would willingly join hive mind? Because by many definitions it would mean killing yourself. You can

obviously quibble but it's still pretty close to suicide. Watts had some ideas, for example religious zealots and child soldiers forced into it. But then I heard and encountered people who have replaced large part of their thinking LLMs.

Your brain is made of parts capable of hosting consciousness but when they connect to each other they kinda meld into a new one. Which has interesting implications for brain to brain communications and hive minds. Two brains connected with enough bandwidth would then meld into single personality
