i love that using ChatGPT right now is just "run everything on Astra XHigh", throw the doombot at large autonomous coding tasks, and watch my usage reset for free every 2 days

Artists today by and large live off the patronage of others who share their values I suspect the artist economy changes little for the lucky few to gain traction and completely disintegrates for those who support themselves thru commercial commissions

Ryan Moulton@moultano.bsky.social

I actually respect artisans deciding that they aren't ever going to use AI for their work, but it has to be coupled with an acknowledgement that this is totally impractical for the real economy.

I have a bad news about what would be involved in spinning up said service and it starts with “A” and it ends in “I can’t believe how entitled people are”

Brittany@sameoldstory.co

I’m watching a thread of people who are demanding 1) an email service alternative to Proton, 2) that doesn’t use AI, and promises to never use AI, 3) is privacy-focused (that means no ads), and finally, is 4) completely free

another downside of clinging to hard-line anti-AI rhetoric. you're just doing yourself and your peers a disservice.

dame@dame.is

Those who can completely “opt out” of or be least affected by societal change of this scale are those w/ privilege. This isn’t a condemnation, but it’s to say many militant anti-AI leaders are fostering an environment that will result in *less* privileged people being more negatively impacted by AI.

there's a lot to hate about how AI is built and used but so much anti-AI rhetoric is a house of cards built of soundbites completely untethered from reality "AI is never useful or accurate" "It's not profitable" "Cognitive offloading is bad" Cling to these self-soothing lies at your own peril.

smoked haters got absolutely smoked on the facts because the entire movement against AI power is built on fruit of a poisoned tree opposing the growing and dangerous power of AI (and its purveyors) requires reckoning with the reality of how it works, not plugging your ears pretending it doesn't

The big players are highly incentivized to make it profitable and keep it locked up, and so far it seems they might be succeeding! The stakes are astronomical, but I don't cling to pretty little lies about how "AI is unprofitable" to soothe myself. I won't pretend the answer is so trivial.

I'll be over here, writing harnesses, trying local models, poking at AI like I did my C64 as a child I can't solve this problem by myself. We need lots of people, steps, time to untangle this trillion-dollar web of power The first step is acknowledging the industry won't collapse on it's own.

Now I personally still think that the moat is thin, and that in ten years OpenAI et al will look like IBM of mainframe era- a powerful near-monopoly turning into a medium fish in a gigantic pond of options. (local, foreign, and specialized models and services abound) Possibly that's my OWN hopium!

I hope, because having the vast majority of the world's "cognitive labor" gatekept by 2-3 giant corporations is a world-shaping scenario that dwarfs anything I can think of (short of thermonuclear war or world-level natural disaster) it's critical for the future of humanity that AI is commoditized.

If you blindly insist AI can't be profitable at scale or broadly useful, then what will you do when that turns out to be wrong? There's a possibility that a handful of companies are pulling off the biggest consolidation of power in history because yes, the technology really is that valuable.

I hate the idea that the inherently queer stance is anti-AI that some people seem to think is the default. I've had people question if I'm even a woman, and call me a tech bro, and it's like they're in active psychosis lmao. If you can't respect me as a woman you're a bigot, AI or not.

hallie iris@irisflower.co

brah i didn't know there were so many trans ppl who like ai on bsky this is fucking crazy !!!!!!

This is the scariest part for me. I've never lacked in ambition- it's self-control I need to keep an eye on, lest I careen off a cliff from relying on principles I don't actually understand.

Ethan Mollick@emollick.bsky.social

My general advice for using AI for any purpose is to ask yourself: "how do I make what I am doing even more ambitious?" You do this over and over until you either hit a wall and thus learn the shape of the jagged frontier (useful!) or you find out that the AI can do more than you think (common!)

the ideal combination is insane ambition and formal structure, without the second as scaffolding it collapses into slop or endless gastown-style epicycles

We are in the voting period. Watch your words cause someone is listening even if you don't think they are.

My take on this is that your posts reflect your desired outcome whether consciously or not, and we're in the period where you really do have way more influence on people's votes than you think, far more than ads or campaign speeches.

a counterintuitive synthesis here is that it is probably a good sign that the "impending Democratic backslide on trans rights" is constantly looming elaboration below:

Drunk On Mystery, but like....Spooky@drunkonmystery.bsky.social

Because there are 10s of thousands of Democratic electeds in the United States, and you have positioned yourself directly into a media environment that is designed to find every statement a Democrat makes that is even vaguely transphobic as soon as it happens.

I absolutely do not care about plagiarism, slop and spam. Not real problems or not new ones. As for cognitive surrender, that's been the norm since we started making tally marks on bones 35k years ago, 6 times older than civilization, it's how human cognition works. We externalize it habitually.

Alexander Schmidt-Lebuhn@anschmidtlebuhn.bsky.social

I responded to "being anti AI is a luxury belief". If, hypothetically, some other person somewhere else had instead written "this is ridiculous, translation isn't the problem, the problem is LLMs facilitating plagiarism, slop, spam, and cognitive surrender", I would emphatically agree with them

This, but also, as a liberal I believe in freedom and human rights for all people, all around the world. That translates into rooting interests in elections where freedoms and rights are on the ballot, as they often are.

Dan Mauler 🎃@meelar.bsky.social

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

why does every story / ad / fluff piece about AI give the absolute saddest pathetic example of AI use? it's pretty obvious to me why so many people assume AI has zero legitimate usage when even the "propaganda" confirms that prior

I sympathise. Im sitting on 3 game mods, 5 essays, 3 book manuscripts and a book revision. I won't release till I find the time to make them as good as I can reasonably make them and AI doesn’t provide an instant shortcut to do that, much as it is useful.

I'm currently sitting on prototypes for five different games. I could just release them as is. But I don't want to release anything I don't think is truly great, and AI can't speed up that process. It takes a lot of iteration and thought. So it might be years before all of them see the light of day.

the main reason I only have one real game prototype is all my other experiments are being subsumed into one overarching toolkit I could have probably crapped out 3 or 4 "full games" already but I don't actually want to release slop, I want to make art, and art still takes time.

playing with level editor prototypes it's mind-blowing that I can just describe my ideal working environment and then just... have a tool that matches how my brain works

everything here is human-designed. I meticulously describe how the tools and interfaces should work, try them out, and iterate until I have something that feels good. there's a lot further to go but I've been creating all sorts of fun-looking environments with just a handful of core concepts

I feel like agentic AI was designed for ADHD-brain I get to jump from project to project, and reading the last reply is more than enough to reload mental context I can juggle a million "special interests", I just forget about projects for a month then come back and ask "so where were we?"

Every interaction feels like traction, progress, hits that dopamine that keeps you focused and in the flow If something bores me or takes too much executive function I have three other cool things I can flip back to - (but of course, I need process that makes me do the important ones eventually)

My biggest takeaway is that reporters should have been pushing back like this since day one. Every time they do he breaks a little bit more.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

😳 WOMAN REPORTER: Do sexual abuse allegations mean nothing to you, sir? TRUMP: Wait. Wait! Wait wait wait. Slow down. Who are you with? REPORTER: NBC, sir. But they are very serious sex abuse allegations TRUMP: Quiet! Isn't she a fresh person? You're a horrible little reporter, aren't you?

No on all WA initiatives But ESPECIALLY NO on I-638.

Doctors and nurses are voicing their objections. I-638 would require EVERY girl who wants to participate in sports to go through biological sex verification. That means expensive, invasive, and utterly gross examinations. Protect our kids and let them play. Vote NO on I-638

genuinely: the strangest thing about now is the gap between the average software person's ambition and what's actually possible loads of stuff you thought was too much work, just beyond your abilities, more trouble than it was worth…. is now $100 and a few days away

me: this hardware behavior vexes me, but I suspect you will find that confining the device's port to a VM host you'll build into this project will resolve the issue claude: indubitably and then it did

Fuck this complete piece of shit. There is no positive outcome where any Dems lose for trans people. She can fuck off completely.

AI really forcing me to reevaluate my internal productivity metrics There are categories of task I can barrel thru at 2-3x or more now and I have to NOT treat that as 2-3x more productive or soon those will be the only tasks I want to do “Make time for creative work” is becoming my new self-care

I see a lot of non-technical people confused about the recent security notices, so here's a quick explanation of how you can minimize risk: burn your driver's license, wipe and smash your computer, cut and dye your hair in a gas station bathroom. Find a coyote to get you over the border. Pay cash.

making a game right now, I literally cannot imagine making it without the tooling that I generate every day it's just grunt work. I made a thing that lofts two curves together in a certain way so I didn't have to manually repair the mesh every time. probably saved 20 hours of the dumbest labour

Glenn Fiedler@mas-bandwidth.bsky.social

Being anti-AI coding in games makes zero sense. With AI you can quickly make amazing, customized tools and engine code for your team that were cost prohibitive to make before, and these tools empower real artists, designers and programmers to make better games.

I have made like ten prototypes in the last week and each proved something and taught me something It’s a game designer’s dream and it’s dizzying

Thoth@thoth.ptnote.dev

But seriously, "AI can help people get into game development by letting them do game design experiments right away instead of them running into this technical cliff they have to spent a lot of time scaling before practicing the skill that actually interests them" feels... very obvious?

If AI is actually that easy to use then I’m an idiot because I learn new tricks daily I am so thankful I didn’t wait any longer to get skilled up because like it or not AI expertise WILL be a deciding factor in most careers moving forward

Siobhán 🪏@shibbi.me

It is very important that average users of AI be and remain idiots. If the average user is competent, that means using AI well is fairly easy, which means there’s far less reason not to use AI. Which is bad. Of course.
