Conservation work is hard. It lurches and retracts and moves incrementally if at all- but it's worth the fight every day.

A lot of no-cut enviros are super mad at Dave for going backwards here, but the truth is that he overpromised on his ability to manifest changes within the state structure and systems. That doesnt make him a hypocrite, it's just slow, hard work that takes all of us pushing together with realism

washingtonstatestandard.comPublic lands commissioner calls on Legislature to approve, fund conservation of state forests • Washington State StandardDave Upthegrove is dialing back his goal to protect 77,000 acres of older state forests from timber harvest.

At its core, this isn't even about how we are mandated to fund state schools with timber sales. Washibgtons whole tax structure and funding model needs an overhaul. This is simply a symptom. The sooner environment realize that, the sooner we get to real change

James' coverage here is great- and it brought me a new way of thinking about Roadless areas and their value as places free from the capitalist exploitation as a rarity in world. if you want a solid resource page about the roadless rule and the landscapes at risk, I personally like: roadless.org

New Natural Causes episode dropped today. I really wanted to get into the ways wild places are of value that capitalism has failed to assign a value to in this one.

He even got the pluralism of the Colville Tribes right- something half this region and most elected officials fuck up.

I just got back from Spokane, and spent some time in the Colville Tribes’ reservation as well as the Spokane Tribe. It’s beautiful to see everyone coming together, especially those indigenous communities who will not get as much attention or as many resources as city folks will. horrible to see 1/

I'm thankful James came up here, but really humbled he took the time to get out of Spokane itself to connect with our rural and Tribal neighbors waging their own battles this fire season and demonstrating their own response and aid efforts.

CALfire doesn't play. That's not an insult or compliment, but an assessment of their approach. They lock on to the assigned objective and blast clean through it, with little concern for how people feel about it. Good for putting down a fire, bad for the gentler aspects of how that impacts community

City of Spokane@spokanecity.org

Evacuation decisions are made by the California Interagency Incident Management Team 7 & Spokane County Emergency Management based on current fire conditions & hazards. Please avoid level 3 evacuation areas, as they are extremely dangerous. For updated evacuation info, visit bit.ly/SRECOfficial....

Nobody reads what I write anyways so: next weekend we're supposed to attend a kids birthday with daycare folks. That family just lost everything in Spokane fires. They want to keep the party for the kids. I'm going to be crying and consoling other parents in the corner at a 4 y/o's party.

And then the Tribes. Fighting so hard for their community for weeks before this. Demonstrating real community and self-reliance while being ignored by so much media. Inter-tribal solidarity with no regard for existing disagreements. It's beautiful and heart wrenching

And I keep crying randomly and just trying to stay busy. I've talked about my inlaws house...then remember it's not there, like accidentally deadnaming someone. Former old co-workers I haven't seen in years who lived in the hardest hit neighborhood, knowing the outcome without the heart to call.

So far, our house stands. But we simply ended up on the right side of the fire line that bisected our community. Like a fucked up lottery, half our social circle ended up homeless. The kids don't really understand. My son just wants to buy his friends new Pokemon cards to make it better. Gutted.

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🕯️🕯️Spokane: they have not issued level 1 or level 2 evacs yet today. The fire is too fast, all they can do is continue to expand the lvl 3 (go now). If you're N/E of the old trail fire: GET READY. NOW. You won't get notice or prep time

I've been in touch the Colville Tribes' donation center about their priority needs for Kaiser Canyon fire relief. If you're in Spokane and want to help fill my truck today, meet here! Priority needs are: personal hygiene products, diapers and wipes, pet food, NEW underwear (all ages and sizes)

When the forest Service implemented the 10 AM Rule in the 1930s, it was a well-intentioned response built out of ignorance for fire regimes and forest ecosystems. Our current fire severity is heavily informed by decades of that bad policy. Bringing it back now isn't ignorance, it's abject stupidity

Americans broadly and vocally rejected Sen. Mike Lee’s public lands sell off in the OBBA. Now Sen. Daines (MT) is giving him another shot to pillage our lands by nullifying the roadless rule via a bill that'll be heard on 6/10. Here’s what to do about it right now, and what you can say: (1/5)

The timber argument fails. Roadless areas are far from mills, on steep terrain, with expensive road needs. Add fuel, labor, equipment, and market pressures, and it’s not profitable. Mills won’t chase bad wood when the front‑country supply is strong. Mills don't jump over dimes to make a nickel (4/5)

USFS can’t maintain the roads it already has with its budget and existing backlog. Adding more roads just adds cost and risk without a safety ROI. Instead it just gets us damage to ecosystems, loss of clean water, and reduced snowpacks. just a bad idea so do something about it. call your senator pls

Call your senator via the Capitol switchboard at 202‑224‑3121. Tell them you oppose Sen. Mike Lee’s amendment to the Wildlife Prevention Act. Point out that 99% of USDA comments on rescinding the Roadless Rule supported keeping it. (2/5)

stuffing this nullification into a “wildfire prevention” bill is laughable since most human‑caused wildfires start close to roads. Opening new road corridors would actually add ignition sources, driving up wildfire response costs, and putting forests at greater risk. (3/5)

Well worth a watch. Another case of normie radicalization. This guy is the former president of a local HOA, a web developer for real estate companies and a self proclaimed "member of the square community" and he's out in the streets.

The whole interview is worth it

Obviously, the right's "2A to stop tyranny" has and will always be performative. The question now that tyranny has come and started murdering the lawful left is how those 2A folks will respond. Because comply or die is quickly becoming the binary option being forced onto them.

In a conference this week with executives from across the country- Someone from Minneapolis introduced themselves. He couldn't get through it. He was sad to leave home, heartbroken by what his friends were experiencing, and angry with how poorly and inaccurately the story was being reported.

He wasn't a radical or an activist, he just gave a damn about his community. The whole room was dead silent. We don't know what to do to help him or Minneapolis. But he told us not to look away, to know that we haven't seen the worst of it- the terror, the cruelty. Don't look away, don't ignore it.

1/2 Look folks, I work in conservation so I care about the public land sell-off. A lot. And I know plenty of leftist folks who seem alarmed that folks are paying more attention to that than, ya know, everything else horrific happening under this administration. BUT, this is the fight to the wage

3/3 This effort is a hugely broad coalition, includes critical Republican base voters, and is unwilling to negotiate or compromise. R's are breaking ranks, it can happen. This is a huge threat to his agenda right now because of how unified and diverse the pushback is. Take notes & capitalize on it.

2/3 Not just because it matters, but because this might stand the best chance of getting beaten. This admin has run roughshod over everything and has only gained momentum- but suddenly it's hit a quagmire than could cripple OBBB. If it doesn't, it'll prove a viable path and give hope keep fighting

Respectfully- kootenai county sheriff's office can stay the fuck on their side of the border, and I expect Spokane police to do the same. we don't want you over here policing our city, anymore than CDA folks want to see us over there. This wasn't appropriate, mutual aid agreement be damned

Unsurprising update on the SPD: theres now evidence of 40mm sponge being deployed as well as some bean bags being fired by the department, even though the chief was on the news last night swearing it was just inter gas and pepper balls. Nice trust foundation established with the public

That's the thing though right- this was a smaller, tightly confined and pretty deeply covered protest. If you're going say something that can get fact checked easily and quickly in a small ecosystem like spokane, you better get it right unless you're just trying to gaslight people

Spokane mayor "I've been a protestor before" is really something to say when you initiate a crackdown instead of joining your residents protesting ICE in our hometown. If "we belong" in Spokane, you belong on the protest line. Both to keep the peace and show what you'll stand for

Welp, Spokane is officially popping off. A light protest of a couple hundred people, overwhelmingly peaceful was declared an unlawful assembly before police escalated. There's now a curfew in place for much of downtown- hell of a start to Pride and no kings this weekend

Watching Jurassic Park, where a computer nerd with a debt problem and delusions of grandeur tears down all the safety systems, with no understanding of the consequences, so he can better facilitate his planned espionage and theft.

So I'm dropping Meta. And while those platforms are generally hellscape, it's worth being specific too: 1. I have seen an unmoderated rise in hate speech there 2. Just constant ads and garbage 3. I see less content from people I want to hear from 4. My kids deserve better social media than that

You are up to date.
