@pkrugman.bsky.social The US Conservatives are the most vocal critics of the EU; because it scares them. It is the worlds #3 economic power, while not following their principles & dogma. Worse, it is willing to say "No!" to Uncle Sam, & to heavily fine large US companies who break EU law.

A visit to the amazing Italian Church in Orkney today. Made and decorated by Italian prisoners of war. The 3D painting detail inside is immense. #orkney

@scalzi.com Which over-used phrases deserve to disappear from the popular vocabulary? My first nomination would be "laser-focused". Particularly as it frequently trying to kid you that a politician is capable of this superhuman degree of concentration and precision.

@elizabethalker.bsky.social Re Preserving Fictions by Harry Christelis. Yes; a definite suggestion of early John Martyn. I saw an OGWT episode where JM sat alone on stage with his guitar and pedal-board. Stunning. I'll be listening to Harry Christelis in hope of being stunned again.

@axios.com Re "Older Democrats walloped by midterms anti-establishment revolt". Good. Republicans have only 3 policies; deregulation, less tax for the wealthy & unlimited defense spending. They never change. The current crop of Democrats haven't been able to argue persuasively against those ideas.

@axios.com Re "Senate Democrats lay out health insurance redesign targets". I wonder how many people will thoroughly read that 86-page RFC? In Congress or elsewhere? An alternative question might be are there any countries with notably good healthcare outcomes vs healthcare costs? How do they do it?

@axios.com The ever widening inequality gap has killed "The American Dream". The Democrats leadership still don't understand or accept this. Credibly addressing this will (eventually) reestablish trust in the party. Nothing else will.

@axios.com Dems leadership trying to cast anyone wanting to actually improve their constituents' lots as "socialist" or "extremist" shows they still don't understand why polls show their party is not liked or trusted. Being Republican-Lite & trying to maintain the status-quo will not work.

Crucible of Britain: ancient migration and the deep roots of mixed-heritage families Yorkshire’s repeated historical intersections of migration and cultural exchange remain, engrained in the DNA of its descendants By John Heywood

@axios.com Re "What America gets right". Jim VandeHei needs to ease back on the Kool-Aid. This piece is written from a CEO's perspective, which is not that of the majority. The benefits he lists will not be apparent to a family struggling to afford their groceries, accommodation & healthcare.

@axios.com Re drought & fireworks bans. Fireworks bans are *always* ignored. However drones could record & map each ignition. Citations could be written. There just has to be the sincere desire to end the nonsense.

@axios.com Re "Dems' Tea Party-like rebellion built by a decade of frustration". Not just 1 decade; 3 decades at least. When the Democrats weren't actually voting for the policies that made the rich very much richer & everyone else poorer, they were failing to prevent them being enacted.

Good News Friday: The Grade II* listed Scargill House Chapel by George Pace (1958-61), located near Kettlewell in Yorkshire Dales National Park, draws inspiration from rural field barns and Scandinavian stave churches. It also has one our favourite twentieth century bird tables, recently restored!

@axios.com Re "Why Americans hate the "good" economy". It has been said before, but obviously no not loud or often enough; "Wall St is not Main St". Rising Wall St. indices don't help households struggling to make ends meet today, or justifiably worried about their future prospects.

@axios.com Re "Kitchen Table Project". Reporting this as some form of revelation is silly. It should not have been a revelation to anyone who shops for their own groceries. Apparently the Dems leadership are not in that demographic.

@gizmodo.com Re "Google Is in Full-On Damage Control Over Its New Health App". What's so hard about a 1-page list of (succinctly explained) functions that can be toggled on or off? Easy enough to revisit it in future if your choices change. #Fitbit #Charge6

@gizmodo.com Re "Google Is in Full-On Damage Control Over Its New Health App". I should not have to spend a day trying to customize the GHealth app to show me what is important to me, and not to pester me with irrelevant nonsense. #Fitbit #Charge6

@gizmodo.com Re "Google Is in Full-On Damage Control Over Its New Health App". Much of Google "Help" site still refers to using the deprecated Fitbit app to setup your new device, meaning the options you'd need no longer exist. Lame & inexcusable. #Fitbit #Charge6

@gizmodo.com Re "Google Is in Full-On Damage Control Over Its New Health App". As they should be. Once again, they've taken something that worked (the Fitbit app) & binned it in favor of their in-house POS. Fortunately I can still find the "Charge 6" data that interests me. #Fitbit #Charge6"
