I will include something like these words in my response to the latest council consultation, which proposes re-use of the plastic bike shed at a London-Manchester mainline station (18-capacity, for a population of 305k, compared to Ghent's 274k).

A train journey does not begin or end at the station platform. Convenient bike parking and easy access to the railway system are essential elements of a transport network that enables people to travel seamlessly from door-to-door.🧵

Lovely stuff, all very Bolton.

Motornormativity latest. Newspaper and residents side with man who destroys planting because they blame the cycleway. www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/2666214...

TdF Femmes 2027: must be a kind of biathlon - only vehicles are encouraged by design on Wellington Road, so perhaps rally cars to Heaviley then bike from there.

Between 2021 and 2025, around 2 million cyclists passed the floating bus stops on Leith Street, Edinburgh, and around 5 million bus passengers boarded or alighted here. No injuries have been recorded. Over the same period, drivers injured around 600 Edinburgh pedestrians, killing 16.

“Dutch people cycle an average of 2.6km each per day. If this pattern was replicated worldwide, annual carbon emissions would drop by 686 million tonnes. This mammoth figure exceeds the entire carbon footprint of most countries, including the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia.” @euronews.com

euronews.comCycling like the Dutch would slash the world’s carbon footprintIf everybody cycled like the Dutch, we could offset the UK or Australia’s entire carbon footprint.

Before (2025) / After (2026) Rue Julien Lacroix in the 20th arrondissement of Paris. It is not a school street since there is still motorized traffic here even though it is now only on one way, but is has been greened a lot nevertheless by removing many car parking spots.

New urban projects like IBA Landgut and Sonnwendviertel comprise medium-rise apartment blocks with social housing complementing the existing city, neither 14 homes per hectare car-dependent sprawl nor 15+ storey vanity projects. So the city has a spatial CONTINUITY.

Cycle infra otherwise in the city appears patchy, with vehicle priority, worn out painted lanes, and a profusion of “stroads”. There are many stats about how extensive the cycling network is, but this cyclist found it sketchy at times. (Streetview pics).

The city has started work on humanizing the Ring, in consultation with Gehl. The Ring is a legacy of the old fortification glacis, given monumental buildings in the 19C and like many grabbed by the highway engineer in the 20C. The plans look very positive for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

Favoriten, a district S of the centre, is implementing Supergratzl, a version of the Barcelona Superblock, strictly limiting through traffic, giving more space to people with play areas, seating and planting.

The R1 Donauweg cycle route along the Danube, even with ferry crossings, is well surfaced, effective and popular with people of all ages, at least the bit I did from Passau. No Trans Pennine Trail style “regeneration” diversion opportunities are necessary here.

After years of waiting, TU Delft is finally on the (tram) map. Yesterday, tram 19 reached the campus, and what a multimodal scene: trams, cycling, walking and green—all sharing the same car-free corridor. This is what a well-connected university looks like: making the right choice the easy choice.
