Something I started, with 104 days left in the year, is writing a bit in Japanese each day. Not typing, writing. Why? Well, back when I was earnestly studying I used to write a lot and it helped me improve. Something I've found since getting married and starting a family is that not writing is

a bit each day would be a good way to work towards my goals. And since I love stationery, I'm incorporating that into this little project. For the remainder of 2026, I'm writing in the Laconic 100 Days (plus a photocopy of 4 days) notebook. Starting January 1st, I'll be using a beautiful Hobonichi

Hon. I also have a fountain pen that I plan to start using for this before the end of the year. As a lefty, using fountain pens can be a challenge. I like writing with the one I have, but it can be a bit messy at times.

detrimental to my Japanese progress. I have goals to meet for December (or January depending on family obligations), the end of March 2027, and (hopefully) 2030. A large part of meeting those goals includes improving my Japanese writing, grammar, and reading speed/comprehension. I thought writing

Sadly, I won’t be able to make it to the festival in Kyoto I was planning to attend. I have a very important appointment I need to attend, and unfortunately it is on the same day. My planning won’t go to waste, however, as I plan to attend next year instead.

I'm hoping to make it down to Kyoto for the 櫛まつり next month. My schedule is free that day (I kept that day open on purpose), so now I'm comparing travel options and debating an overnight stay. #櫛まつり #京都 #KushiMatsuri #Kyoto #Japan

However, my budget needs to be considered and I have 車検 scheduled for the beginning of the month. Add a few missed days of work (unavoidable) this month and the budget is tight. I might have to delay until next year...

It looks like the river by our house is starting to go down. It came very close to overflowing its banks… very, very close! I know there is still the potential for flooding as things move downstream (upstream from us) or we get more rain, but so far we’re good! #福井 #大雨 #北陸

Excited for September 1st! Thinking out my game plan since this year the Bijusukai Weeks was a spring start release (so not even announced until the yr started). Any idea if #Hobonichi is releasing one for 2027 as a spring start? I personally prefer Jan starts, but really like this year’s design…

I will be getting a cousin and need to avoid the covers. There are some really nice colors, but I don’t need a new one! #ほぼ日

On the days I don't have to travel for work, I'm trying to work my way through some (relatively) recent photos. Sitting down to edit isn't also easy and can be a bit time consuming, so I try to capture the best image possible in order to minimize the time spent post shoot.

I'm continuing to work on my editing skills. Trying new things and improving upon existing skills is something I think is important. Not just when it comes to work, but in all aspects of life.

It's been a busy (and sweltering) few weeks. I've finally gotten to sit down and start editing some of the photos I took. I'm continuing to add to my available prints. You can check out the latest addition (without the watermark) at: eam.darkroom.com/products/190... Feel free to comment or share!

It’s fake clean time…basically since moving, I still haven’t gotten to organizing/unpacking. We have the house check at 3pm today (bought a new build last year, so there are periodic checks to make sure all is okay), so putting boxes into the closet/walk-in closet as well as dumping things into

boxes. Moving twice while having a difficult pregnancy, and then shortly after major back surgery (all within 1.5 years - actually 1yr 5mths), then going back to work, all while dealing with chronic health issues means I haven’t been able to purge/clean/organize the way I’d like.

As we are going into Obon, I’m hoping to pull a couple of boxes out a day and go through them. Ultimate goal is to be done by November!

My business cards arrived the other day! I'm excited to start using them. Overall, the quality isn't bad, they weren't overly expensive, and they were printed and shipped in a reasonable amount of time.

(or have worked in) Japan. When I designed my card, I wanted to be able keep my information up-to-date without having to reprint. Also, since I offer a variety of services, I wanted one card that could cover everything. To achieve that, I used a QR code that links to my LinkTree.

This way I can update links as needed. To keep it simple as well, I added my phone and my business email as well. This way people who don't want to use the QR code can still easily contact me.

I went with Canva and the design process was smooth. After drafting my design, I sat on it for a week or so before making a few edits. I ordered on Friday and had them by Tuesday. While some people have mentioned that business cards are outdated, most of those people aren't based in

I was in Tokyo overnight the other day and finally made it to Senso-ji in Asakusa. Going on a weekday evening was enjoyable. Was it crowded? Not exactly. There were groups of people, but nothing compared to the photos I've seen of it during the day. I imagine Fri/Saturday evenings are crowded...

I have more pictures, but I hesitate to post some of them because people are in them. This photo also has people, but you can't really see any of the faces clearly. How do you handle posting photos that include people's faces? Blurring before posting?

I think I've settled on a business card design (that I designed through Canva). I'm going to get my husband's feedback (since he's better versed in the Japanese business culture type stuff)... It's s double-sided card. What do you all think?

Looking at some shots from yesterday and it seems I need to learn to clean the sensor in this camera...I've never cleaned a mirrorless before.

This weekend the goal is to find treatment for MCAS while living in an area that isn’t exactly knowledgeable about my medical conditions 😓

I'm looking for recommendations for POD postcards w/affordable shipping. The POD service I'm using for some things is good, the cost of shipping for the postcards is way too high for me to realistically offer them through my online shop. I'm also looking for recs for postcard printing in Japan...

I'm in the preliminary stages of planning a trip to Miyoshi and am considering my transportation options. The advantage of driving means I can set my own schedule. If I take the highway, I save hours of time, but the tolls are expensive. The non-highway route is probably scenic, but takes longer.

If I take the train, I will need to either rely solely on public transportation or rent a car when I get there. I probably won't save that much money (or it will be more expensive - I need to research the fares a bit more), and it will take more time. I don't have the luxury of a lot of free time

Okie, so my MCAS experiment worked the way I kind of didn't want it to 😓 Going to bring up the results to my doctor at my next visit because Rx treatment will be much cheaper than OTC treatment 😭

I’m thinking about offering some photos as digital wallpaper. Is digital wallpaper something you would ever consider purchasing (not mine, just in general)? If so, would you want one image or a package of 3-5 images? If not, why not?

I’m making progress towards my goal of mainly freelance work. One part of that is online travel consulting (mainly) focused on the Hokuriku region. Today I put up a page to book consultations… Feel free to share! buymeacoffee.com/emilytanaka/...

Did a bit of gardening. I should have staked the tomatoes sooner, but they’ll be fine. Cut some 大葉, 赤しそ, cilantro, and lettuce to wash and use over the next few days. The ginger is starting to sprout… I have other things growing as well. This is all container gardening!

As spring morphs into summer, those of us in Japan know that rainy season is just around the corner (or, depending on where you are, has already begun!). I'm personally not a fan of hot or humid weather. I am, however, a fan of not only rain, but the lush, green foliage that it brings.

What are the benefits/downsides to platforms like Buy Me a Coffee or Ko-fi? I’m thinking of adding them to my LinkTree and such moving forward as I move more and more into freelance work…

Sorry for the self promotion post… New print up on Darkroom…feel free to share! Getting edits done and uploaded is becoming easier the more I do it. Hopefully a cropped version of this will be up on my Displate page in the coming days. #photography #Japan eam.darkroom.com/products/186...

I’m looking for recommendations for a company that prints business cards in Japan. I’d prefer online, able to print a QR code on the back, not expensive, and relatively quick. Any suggestions?

What do you think about lenses? For the past few years (probably a bit longer) I’ve shot with my two NIKKOR prime lenses and have loved it. In August I updated my camera body to a Nikon Z8, and until yesterday had only used those two lenses on it.

much as the primes. A quick Google gave me some information regarding my lenses and surprisingly, one of the Tamron lenses I picked up years ago is highly rated (although that may be newer versions of the lens). Camera people or lens knowledgeable people, what do you think of the following lenses:

I have a small collection of non-prime lenses that I’ve amassed over the years (since around 2002/3). I wasn’t shooting full frame, had started with a film body before switching to digital, and didn’t want to spend a ton of money on lenses (so not only the cost of the

individual lens, but also how much variability per lens). This means the bulk of my lenses aren’t exactly “pro quality”. This may be why I don’t reach for most of my lenses - the quality of the shots I get. Yesterday I tried shooting with one of the lenses and I just didn’t feel it/enjoy it as

I am enjoying the new camera’s image quality. It allows for cropping without losing image quality (at least, perceptible image quality). Details: Taken April 19, 2026 in Sabae, Fukui (Japan). Nikon Z8, 50mm f/4.5 1/800 iso 200
