Some good news from the weekend - the Mongabay series "Death Flights" was recognized with the @gijn.org at the Global Investigative Journalism Network conference in Kuala Lumpur. We're pleased to have contributed to this important work.

What's new: ➡️ A new machine-learned model to detect gold mining activity, trained from scratch on Sentinel-2 satellite image data ➡️ Output data spanning 2018-present ➡️ A fine-tuned SAM2 segmentation model to map mining scars

Global Plastic Watch is driving impact in peer-reviewed science. A new study used GPW's satellite-derived open dump site data across Indonesia to measure how China's 2018 plastic waste import ban affected air quality. Open data and open research is the way to go! 🔗 bit.ly/43oDtDm

bit.lyA spatiotemporal, quasi-experimental causal inference approach to characterize the effects of global plastic waste export and burning on air quality using remotely sensed dataAbstract. Open burning of plastic waste may pose a significant threat to global health by degrading air quality, but quantitative research on this problem—

Our goal with Earth Index is to get powerful tools in the hands of those closest to environmental challenges, reducing the technical and resource barriers of processing satellite data and running models.

Since opening it up to everyone last month, we've been amazed by the response and thrilled to see journalists around the globe using it to uncover stories that matter.

🌱 Climate & Environmental Data Day is happening on 4/21 during #DCClimateWeek (4/20-26). We'll be sharing our work during the "Building Resilient Data Systems Beyond Federal Government" panel. Join us! ↪️ More here: luma.com/kk4w2ljr

🫧 Water systems everywhere are in crisis causing record floods and depleting groundwater reserves. One potential solution: RechargeIQ, a new tool that identifies the best locations across the U.S. to capture excess floodwater and store it underground. ➕ More here: lnkd.in/eUkakKa7

New monthly emissions data from Climate TRACE are out for January 2026, showing a monthly total of 5.3 Bt CO2e, a 0.3% increase vs. January 2025.

Proud to see our partners (Vasit Sagan, Derek Tesser) in tracking cattle emissions at #RemoteSensingLab at Saint Louis University featured in this @climatetrace.org interview and have Earth Index identified as a key part of the work. 👏

We sat down with Vasit Sagan, PhD and Derek S. Tesser, PhD from the Remote Sensing Lab at Saint Louis University to discuss how their research is powering Climate TRACE’s cattle emissions inventory. climatetrace.org/news/saint-l...

This marks the launch of the inaugural Amazon Mining Watch Panorama report and we're proud to be a founding partner alongside #amazonconservation and the @pulitzercenter.org Our team used AI and satellite data to track illegal activities in the region.

The findings are sobering: mining-related deforestation continues to expand across the Amazon, reaching into protected areas and indigenous terrorities. The persistent and pervasive nature of this threat underscore the escalating crisis of illegal gold mining in the Amazon.

Consistent, data-driven monitoring provided by Amazon Mining Watch Panorama is crucial for understanding the scope of the problem and to promote accountability. We look forward to sharing future quarterly reports with you. 👉 Access the full report: amazonminingwatchpanorama.org

From small farmhouses in Nebraska to goshalas in India, Ed Boyda is sharing reflections from a year of scanning the planet for cows.

🗞️ ✨ Is perpetual acceleration possible? Desirable? Super accessible AI for the Earth is for sure making action faster. We’re seeing it in the focus and delivery of our engineering on Earth Index. More in our Feb bulletin: 👉 bit.ly/3OXqK6p

🤝 Last week, our fully remote team came together in 🏛️ D.C. for a 3-day in-person retreat. Many thanks to @developmentseed.org team for hosting us at their beautiful office. We also met many new & old friends at Wed's happy hour hosted by #geoDC. Feeling re-energized and excited for what’s ahead!✨

📋 We're excited to share a look behind the scenes at how we built the Storm Events Database Explorer. Here's more on our approach to the discovery, design iterations, and development of taking a cumbersome batch of data and transforming it into clear visual exploration. bit.ly/3YANM4B
