By streamlining the contracting process, joint bidding has helped reduce delays, keep infrastructure projects moving forward, and minimize the disruptions that too often frustrate residents, commuters, and business owners.

I have long been committed to making government work more efficiently for the people it serves, which is why I am proud to have helped secure an extension of joint bidding so that New Yorkers can get to where they need to go without unnecessary delays.

Joint bidding allows street construction work and the relocation of private utility lines to be coordinated under a single city contract, rather than requiring these projects to be bid and negotiated separately.

What if a traffic ticket could actually change someone’s behavior instead of just costing them money? Assemblymember Jordan Wright and I have introduced legislation that would give cyclists ticketed for breaking traffic laws a choice: watch a road safety video or pay a fine.

What if a traffic ticket could actually change someone’s behavior instead of just costing them money? Assemblymember Jordan Wright and I have introduced legislation that would give cyclists ticketed for breaking traffic laws a choice: watch a road safety video or pay a fine.

Our bill is inspired by an innovative initiative in London known as the “Sin Bin,” where police set up a roadside tent and give cyclists caught violating traffic laws the opportunity to watch a safety video instead of paying a fine.

Cycling is good for our health, our wallets, and our environment. We want more New Yorkers to feel comfortable riding bikes, but we also need everyone to follow the rules of the road and respect pedestrian safety.

In New York, I’m working to advance sustainable development, expand our urban forest, strengthen green infrastructure, and reduce our dependence on cars. Protecting nature and building thriving, affordable communities must go hand in hand.

As our population grows, we must move away from car-dependent sprawl and toward compact, walkable, transit-oriented communities that create more homes while protecting forests, farmland, wildlife habitats, and open space.

At a time when our federal government is retreating from environmental leadership, states like New York and California are stepping up. We are showing the world that protecting nature and building thriving, affordable, sustainable cities can and must go hand in hand.

I passed legislation requiring the creation of our city’s 1st Urban Forest Master Plan, with a goal of expanding our tree canopy to 30% by 2035. We planted over 1,000 trees in our district and advanced street redesigns that incorporate green infrastructure and create more space for people & nature.

Now, in the State Senate, I’m working to build on that progress by advancing policies that protect natural habitats, encourage sustainable development, and reduce our dependence on cars. The decisions we make in our cities today will help determine the future of our planet for generations to come.

In NYC, we’re working to demonstrate what that future can look like. During my time on the City Council, I negotiated rezonings that allow for the creation of thousands of new homes in the most transit-accessible area in our country.

Standing before leaders and delegates from around the world, I shared my belief that cities must be at the forefront of the global effort to confront this crisis. As the world’s population continues to grow, we must move away from car-dependent suburban sprawl that destroys forests, grasslands,

🌳 Street Tree Care Event When I served on the City Council, I met my goal of planting 1,000 new street trees across District 3 and introduced New York City’s first Urban Forest Master Plan. I also launched the Green the In-Between Fund to bring even more trees to neighborhoods that need them most.

Now, as a State Senator, I’m working to build on that progress and advance policies that protect pollinator habitats, expand urban green space, restore native ecosystems, and promote sustainable development.

Protecting biodiversity isn’t just about preserving distant rainforests and wilderness areas. It’s also about transforming the places where billions of people already live. Cities are not separate from nature. They are part of it, and they must be part of the solution.

Thank you to Rebecca Fischer and the entire team at New Yorkers Against Gun Violence for this tremendous honor and for your tireless advocacy. Thank you to Governor Hochul for her leadership, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and the countless advocates and

survivors who made this victory possible. We cannot bring Francesco back, but his legacy will live on through the lives this law will save. 💙 Watch a portion of my remarks from last night.

When I heard the story of Francesco, a 17-year-old who died by suicide after gaining access to an unsecured shotgun, I saw so much of myself in him. Like Francesco, I struggled with my identity and mental health as a teenager. The difference is that my parents did not have a gun in our home.

Above all, I want to recognize Diana Cochran, Francesco’s mother, whose extraordinary courage and determination turned unimaginable grief into a powerful force for change. Without her advocacy, this legislation would not have been possible.

Francesco’s Law requires firearms across New York State to be safely secured when they are not under their owner’s immediate control, helping prevent suicides, accidental shootings, gun theft, and other tragedies. In my remarks last night, I shared why this legislation is so deeply personal to me.

This year, our Senate Democratic Majority passed Francesco’s Law, sponsored by Senator Erik Bottcher ( @ebottcher.bsky.social ), to modernize New York’s safe-storage laws by requiring all gun owners to securely store their guns when they are not being used or carried.
