After 34 years taking their collection from 1,000 to over 150,000 movies, Scarecrow Video’s beloved longtime buyer Mark Steiner is calling it a career after having helped shape Seattle’s (and the world’s) largest physical media store📽️
My story @seattletimes.com: www.seattletimes.com/entertainmen...
This $100m movie did $11m at the box office this weekend — feels like a significant share of that total came from Portland! :)
(The take was well ahead of box office forecasts but far, far short of what it’d need to be profitable. That’s ok. The Knights can afford to indulge themselves.)
For @ebertvoices.bsky.social, asked WILDWOOD director Travis "AI Can Go Fuck Itself" Knight about a cheeky sign tucked away in the film that reads, “Enjoy handmade art before it’s gone forever.” No mere easter egg, it's something he values in our "increasingly frictionless" world 📽

For @ebertvoices.bsky.social, had a great conversation with WILDWOOD director Travis Knight about the film’s long journey, preserving stop-motion as an artistic endeavor in an increasingly automated world, Portland being the center of stop-motion, and much more 📽️

POSSIBLE LOVE: One of the best, most well-acted films of the year, Lee Chang-dong’s latest is a quiet knockout. Wish it was at more (any) theaters in Seattle, but Washington folks, you can & should see it at the Crest Cinema & @thegrandcinema.bsky.social📽️
My review: www.inlander.com/chang-dong-s...
In Lee Chang-dong’s brilliantly acted new film, “Possible Love,” a community’s devastation plays out through a documentary lens—and through a tale of two very different couples. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
Always a long, sad day when losing a great artist, though the below piece @seattletimes.com has now been updated with reflections from Tom Skerritt himself over the years, as well as his EAST OF THE MOUNTAINS director S.J. Chiro, who shared a moving tribute that made me go to pieces📽️

A delight to partner with @tnyfrontrow.bsky.social on a few capsule film reviews this week (link below). And I rarely say this, but here's one to skip!
My friend and colleague @justincchang.bsky.social and I teamed up on a newsletter roundup of new releases; I have special enthusiasm for one film in the batch, Eleanor Coppola's absorbing and moving documentary Making Marie Antoinette:

WILDWOOD, while I have some hangups when it comes to the story, is another stop-motion achievement from Laika. My review is below 📽️

WILDWOOD: Hi. Laika’s latest stop-motion wonder is breathtaking. It's a stunning triumph of animation and art itself in which the tonal darkness has only grown on me. If CORALINE was its SPIRITED AWAY, this is its PRINCESS MONONOKE 📽️

Opening in theaters this weekend, Travis Knight's WILDWOOD, handcrafted in Portland's Laika Studios, joins our previously announced nominees for Best Pacific Northwest Film.
In select theaters today ahead of its Nov. 6 Netflix debut, Lee Chang-dong's exquisitely acted Chekhovian chamber drama POSSIBLE LOVE — about despair and desire, socioeconomic and psychological unease — might be the year's best film. See it on a big screen.

“We all bring our own perspectives, challenges, joys, pain, and sorrow to these experiences. If we can put them authentically into the stories, hopefully they’ll reach another person and make them feel slightly less alone."

Such an awesome anecdote in the comment section:
"I fondly remember Skerritt coming to watch himself in "A River Runs Through It" at the Guild 45th in 1991. In his honor, we put his name on the marquee instead of Brad Pitt."

A few words on someone I was lucky enough to spend a little time with (and almost had the chance to take much more that I will now forever regret). RIP Tom. Gonna miss you. www.rogerebert.com/tributes/see...
RIP to Tom Skerritt, one of my very favorite actors in some of my very favorite films. What a kind and good human being he was, too. I will never forget his visit to the Pickford for a screening of ALIEN; his warmth to all of us and his generosity of spirit will stay with us for a lifetime.
RIP Tom Skerritt. A great actor who had an uncanny ability to show up in the most iconic movies, even if it was with the briefest part. I did a wide-ranging talk with him a few years ago that's still one of my favorite interviews [Gift link]: www.vulture.com/2021/10/tom-...

The moment is now here: Kogonada’s ZI is finally coming to theaters. A transcendent meditation on time that has all the joys of a Linklater film (including an all-time great karaoke scene) while remaining entirely its own, it's one of 2026’s best. Go see it starting Nov. 12 @nwfilmforum.bsky.social📽️

ZI: Kogonada returns to form in flooring fashion with a bold, beautiful, and beguiling film that's like BEFORE SUNSET was merged with LA JETÉE to reflect on the art of time itself just as its all slipping away. Best of the festival thus far 📽️
My #Sundance2026 review: www.thewrap.com/creative-con...
Kogonada immerses us in feelings of both quiet sadness and enduring joy as we follow these two souls through Hong Kong as time begins to increasingly fold in on itself. It’s less about making things legible than it is about leaping into the feeling of being adrift 📽️

I interviewed writer-directors Kelly O'Sullivan and Alex Thompson for @chicagpodfilm.bsky.social ahead of the Chicago Int'l Film Festival centerpiece screening of MOUSE tonight. It was a bit of a dream conversation.

Will have much more on it quite soon, but this is genuinely one of those "how did they do this?!" films where the more I learn, the more I'm still astounded by what's been achieved. The Pacific Northwest remains the center of stop-motion animation in the world 📽️
