Changes in the NHPA in the BAAJA could impact ~15k CRM jobs in the US & gut Tribal sovereignty (listen to the Tribes on that one, not the bill's proponents). We couldn't touch on that in this interview, but we're thankful for help getting the word out! #Section106
Talk of #Iowa featured OSA's John Doershuk & Elizabeth Reetz, Meskwaki THPO Tieranny Keahna & ACRA president Shawn Patch to discuss #Section106 & the senate's proposed changes to the NHPA. Listen at the link! ๐บ tiny.cc/s8cc101

#Section106 of the NHPA is about balancing preservation & development. Sometimes that's done through mitigation. Mitigation for the demolition of the Black Hawk Bridge across the Mississippi River in Lansing #Iowa occurred as a documentary, driven by the local community.๐บhttps://tinyurl.com/59v4c5j5
"While tweaks are possible, a rewrite or removal of the section in question is unlikely because it would upset the balance of a painstakingly negotiated bill." Notice that no one defending the bill or saying it's beneficial to Tribes actually represents Tribes. punchbowl.news/article/ener...
"The bill would erode state and Tribal authority provided by the Clean Water Act to review and certify federal permits to protect that state or Tribeโs water resources. The bill would also hand developers new exemptions from Clean Water Act permitting..." tinyurl.com/yuxb9tc5
"BAAJA Title IV is a. . . destructive provision for climate and health. The amount of power it gives corporations over federal agencies could potentially be as significant for corporate dominance of the US federal agencies as Citizen United was for corporate dominance of US politics" tiny.cc/pqwb101

We have 31 days to tell our Senators to VOTE NO on #BAAJA Kill the bill before it gets to the House ๐บ #archaeology #crm #climate #historicpreservation #environment
@theswinerepublic.bsky.social, have you reviewed the CWA part of the Bipartisan American Affordability & Jobs Act due for a senate vote on 11/9? It's rewrite of the National Historic Preservation Act leaves Iowa cultural resources extremely vulnerable to destruction, is it the same for our envt?
Do lawmakers realize how bad BAAJA is for Tribal sovereignty & historic preservation? Don't ask the bill's authors, they didn't consult. Hear it directly from Tribal Nations & CRM professionals! @altnps.bsky.social @hcrichardson.bsky.social
Mini๐งต! Follow @iowaarchaeology.bsky.social for more #Iowa Section 106 success stories throughout the month! Without the NHPA and Section 106, there's a whole lotta important Iowa local history that would've never been discovered.
We're celebrating this month's 60th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act with Section 106 success stories from #Iowa! ๐บ
Section 106 in this bill would only apply to federal undertakings on federal lands. #Iowa has no state-level protections for cultural resources aside from ancient burials, leaving the vast majority of archaeological sites in Iowa unprotected from development and destruction.
Tribal sovereignty in the United States and the National Historic Preservation Act are under attack from proposed federal regulation changes, and the permitting bill currently in the Senate. This system has worked well for 60 years. Please contact your elected representatives.

Sending so much love to my School of the Wild colleagues; ICSSD teachers, staff, and students; family and friends of those lost; and everyone at Borlaug. This is so incredibly sad, and the whole community is grieving for Hannah and Ahmed.

I've been quiet but busy here in Iowa, collecting TONS of data, crunching metrics, developing impact data & talking to congressional aides. This article is licensed for those who wanna adapt content for your area - go for it! Happy to share how I came up with some of the data. #Section106 #crm๐บ

Creating art & crafting helps my brain process how to approach big challenges, and next week will be a flurry of meetings and responding to action items and sharing information (within my abilities as a public service employee) as we fight these threats to historic preservation & Tribal consultation
New book chapter out! But more importantly, it brings full circle an important Section 106 creative mitigation we did a few years ago, with heavy Tribal and local community involvement, not only in the process but in the communication of their story. Playlist from that project: tinyurl.com/5n8pxwyd
OSA contributed to the recently released volume, Human Identities in the Archaeological Record: Interdisciplinary Perspectives from Late Antiquity to the Modern Period, edited by Annamaria Diana, Alice Toso, and Daniela Marcu Istrate and published by Bloomsbury Academic, London: tinyurl.com/4nyp73yb
Oh, that feeling of a brand new author's copy! Our chapter is on a collaborative creative mitigation that occurred after catastrophic weather washed out a lake & subsequently, Indigenous sites were damaged. Alfie knows so many words, I had to screenshot my incomplete list! He also knows the names of his cat siblings, dog friends, and human besties. He understands word combos too. Tried talking buttons but he sends them flying with his brute paw! ๐ He's my poodle toddler.
how many words do you think your dog knows? what are they?

This is so exciting! My immense thanks and gratitude to this army of public archaeologists for contributing their time, expertise, and experience to help make this book happen! We can only improve public archaeology by learning from and collaborating with each other ๐ซถ๐บ #pubarch
I'm excited for the awards ceremony this evening & celebratory dinner with other contributors afterwards! You can find this book at the Bloomsbury booth and say to me at the Project Archaeology booth where we can chat about how to integrate public outreach into anything you're working on โบ๏ธ #SAA2026
Congrats to this book & its contributors for receiving the 2026 Society for American Archaeologyโs Outstanding Public Archaeology Initiative Award! It was co-edited by OSA's Elizabeth Reetz. Authors include OSA Indian Advisory Council members Suzanne Buffalo & Julie Martineau tinyurl.com/37zwbya4
Teaching, outreach, and public programming are consistently undervalued & underpaid across the humanities and sciences, when practitioners know that effectively lighting that *spark* among the public is critical to the sustainability and future of museums, archaeology, science, etc.
The Museums Association publishes its updated research research and recommendations (yes CIfA recommendations) for pay rates for museum staff. The research acknowledges low pay impacts recruitment, retention of staff and the ability to attract a more diverse workforce. Who'd 'a' guessed?
