Buses...i.e. the vehicles, not necessarily the services. Even though they've got heavier and much more expensive. And bus shelters, if they're looked after. OTOH the roads they drive on...

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

"With Edinburgh's population a fifth bigger than when bus lanes were first laid down in 1997 and with congestion from private cars, something has to happen (etc)" CORRECTION: Edinburgh's bus lanes were first laid down before 1997. www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/opinion... Otherwise ✔️

edinburghnews.scotsman.comBruce Whitehead: What’s wrong with making life easier, cleaner and safer on the buses? Why don't climate change deniers and Conserv-atives like Cllr Iain Whyte, who railed yesterday against improved bus travel lanes, understand transport?

Bus Users UK comment, with our slightly cantankerous reply below.

Scotland's First Minister, John Swinney, has pledged to bring the country’s bus network back into public control by the end of this Parliament. Read our full response bit.ly/4sh99pK

Lothian Buses is the UK's largest municipal bus company. The City of Edinburgh Council (via Edinburgh Transport Holdings) owns 91%, Midlothian Council 5%, East Lothian Council 3%, West Lothian Council 1%. It operates most bus services in Edinburgh and many in East, Mid and West Lothian. It owns

Lothian Country, East Coast Buses, Edinburgh Bus Tours, Lothian Motorcoaches & Eve Coaches. It is run by Board appointed by its owners, which includes no Councillors. It operates in a deregulated environment. A few services are subsidised by local Council(s); the vast majority are commercial.

Ahem. ...Bus and tram ridership in Edinburgh fell from nearly 290 million in 1950, when its population was about 100,000 lower, to just over 80 million in 1996-8. Then rose to about 120 million in 2019; post-Covid, Edinburgh and Lothians bus trips are back to a similar level.

England/Wales, but an excellent resource for Scotland's Better Buses Bill which should include bus stop & service standards. Edinburgh's guidance mostly complies except: 1. maintenance is poor 2. 'In urban areas, the vast majority of households should have access to a bus stop WITHIN 400m'

🚍 New report: bus stops are the gateway to bus travel, but too many disabled people face barriers before they even board. Our research reveals the practical improvements that could make bus travel more inclusive for all. Read the report🔗 https://ow.ly/NqaZ50ZX86v

Your occasional reminder that Lothian Buses has advised that average bus journey times along the A1 corridor have increased by approximately 22% since 2019. www.edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/fi...

The City of Edinburgh Council@edinburghcouncil.bsky.social

New bus lane times start Monday 12 October - Milton Road East to London Road - 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week. A trial to improve bus journey times and reliability. You can still park and load in most locations but some times will change.

5-part thread. N.B. Edinburgh & Lothians decision-makers...this is a cautionary tale, NOT an example to follow.

North East PTUG@northeastptug.bsky.social

These CCTV images sum up the frustrating experience for bus passengers travelling between Newcastle and North Tyneside. This is one of a number of key corridors across the North East identified for bus priority investment to reduce the impact of traffic congestion. Much of the money remains unspent.

📣 WANTED (Midlothian) Local activists/campaigners to push for bus route(s) through Auchendinny & other local villages which aren't served by Penicuik routes. Local residents are cut off if they can't manage the hills to Penicuik and the main road. DM/email EBUG with contact details.

2015: all bus lanes in Edinburgh reduced to Monday-Friday peak hours only. 2026: bus lane fines have more than quadrupled. How's it working out then @edinburghcouncil.bsky.social ?

Josh Pizzuto-Pomaco@joshpizpom.bsky.social

EXC: The amount of cash generated by bus lane fines in Edinburgh has more than quadrupled over the last decade. @heraldscotland.bsky.social www.heraldscotland.com/news/2660833...

Well done CBT, (England & Wales version of @transform.scot) for showing better bus stops stuff can be a winner. Now, about @edinburghcouncil.bsky.social ... @cllrcmiller.bsky.social @cllrjomo.bsky.social

We are so honoured that our #BetterBusStops campaign won Campaign of the Year at the #NationalTransportAwards! Used by millions of us every day, bus stops are vital to communities, accessibility & sustainability. Thank you to the brilliant supporters helping us champion and improve bus stops!

#CatchTheBusMonth is over, but here's another day to mark. FYI What's on Our Curator's doorstep* is an OK bus stop, including a shelter that's unkempt but basically does the job. * strictly speaking a few metres away.

Campaign for Better Transport@bettertransport.bsky.social

Today is International Day of Older People - the theme this year is 'What's on your doorstep?' Transport is an essential component of age-friendly communities - from reliable, accessible buses to well-maintained pavements. Let's work to make transport better this #IDOP.

Myth 14: As #CatchTheBusMonth ends, EBUG will finally stop droning on about buses. Mythbusting: we've got 3 meetings due with local groups, a TEC deputation 'likely', meetings with Councillors/operator etc etc. EBUG: more oomph than the Duracell bunny, more limbs than Monty Python's Black Knight.

Edinburgh Bus Users Group@edinburghbug.bsky.social

Myth 13: Buses are inaccessible. Mythbusting: www.gov.uk/government/p... Aside from the fact that elderly & disabled people disproportionately rely on buses (web-cdn.bsky.app/profile/edin...) the main problems are: 1. no service 2. access to BUS STOPS h/t @cllrcmiller.bsky.social 3. poor

Final reminder our AGM's tomorrow, from 6pm online*. edinburghbususers.group/members-bull... All EBUG members should have received notice & details. New members joining today are welcome, but may not yet secure voting rights, unless our chair is feeling generous. Non-members can watch enviously.
