Wife: "Did you take out the trash?" Me: "You pointed out a real wrinkle in my planning, and it's the sort of load-bearing asymmetry that can lead to a wedged marriage. Let me ground my answer on facts rather than hand-waving…" Wife: 🤬

I don’t usually talk about living with T1 diabetes, because I never thought that could help anyone, but chatting with @scott.hanselman.com made me change my mind. He helps a lot of people (myself included) by sharing his struggles, so if there’s someone I could help in some way, it’s worth a try.

- Do a quick research on the condition: how it differs from T2 diabetes, what you can do help them if they are struggling, etc. - Ask them how you can best support them - Cut them some slack, because they may be having an awful day even though they’re doing everything right

Living with this condition is like having to juggle 3 balls, 24/7. You can still do (almost) everything a functional and productive adult can do, as long as you can do it with one hand. You can’t drop the balls. And that’s on a good day.

If you’re stressed, or your body is fighting an infection, or if mercury is retrograde, you have to do it blindfolded while riding a monocycle. You can’t drop the balls. If you have a friend or a coworker who has T1 diabetes, you can help by:

I’m really proud of all the work that happened behind the scenes, nonstop for days on end, including evenings and weekends, so we could keep our customers safe. Read all about how @netlify.com responded to the React2Shell vulnerability. 🔗 www.netlify.com/blog/ongoing...

At @netlify.com, we use Netlify to build Netlify. This is a small anecdote of a customer who sent us a feature request regarding our Blobs product: they wanted to delete entries and entire stores from the UI. We used Netlify Agent Runners to build this and shipped it to production in record time.

As a community, we need to decide whether we still care about the language as the fabric that binds us together. As companies, we have the responsibility to balance our business goals with the interests of the community we’re part of (and from which we profit).

This is a post about my grandma. She was born in 1928 and she had an incredible life. In her early twenties, with three small children, she lost her husband. I can't begin to imagine how scary it must've been to be a single mother of three in 1950s Portugal, but she pulled through.

She remarried my grandpa, also a widower with three kids, and they had two kids together. "I had 5 kids, my husband had 5 kids, none of them died but there's only 8 of them". She loved saying this and seeing people getting really confused. One of the many riddles and jokes in her vast repertoire.

She'd been bedridden for years now, and every time I went to see her I thought I was going to bring her some joy. Except it was always the other way around — despite her poor health, she was the one lifting others up, with a positivity I'll forever admire. She passed away today and I'll miss her.

Idea: an em dash certification programme. If the system can find content using em dashes that has been verifiably authored by you before the proliferation of LLMs, you get verified as an OG em dash user.

I have just bankrupted my two little nephews at Monopoly. I saw their hopes and dreams vanish into thin air as they handed me their cash; and yet I showed no mercy. What kind of monster am I?

The same edge function that does the Blobs lookup also transforms the HTML to set the title and the dynamically-rendered image in the different meta tags. This means that when you share a link, the crawler that fetches the metadata will see the tags modified by the edge function.

Shareability was important. When you share a sandwich with your friends, I wanted it to unfurl to the specific name and ingredient combination you chose, not a generic set. This is challenging with single-page applications though, since crawlers will just see an empty page shell.

When you save a sandwich, the client calls an API endpoint served by a serverless function. It takes the data and saves it to a Netlify Blobs store. It generates a unique ID and uses the conditional writes feature to ensure that we don't accidentally overwrite an existing entry.

When you load a sandwich permalink, an edge function reads the unique ID from the URL and looks it up in Blobs. If it finds an entry, it writes the title, author and list of ingredients on a JavaScript object. The client then reads this to assemble the sandwich ingredients.

I used the Netlify Vite Plugin to bring all of the @netlify.com platform right into Vite's native local development flow. This gave me a data storage solution and a serverless backend for free, without having to configure anything or introduce additional tooling. Love the simplicity.

I want to add a new feature to eduardoboucas.com and I think it could be fun to do it live. Join me and let’s vibe this thing together! Tomorrow, August 1st, at 4pm UTC. I’ll share the link here before it starts. (If I can figure out how that even works.)
