I think this desire to "solve a puzzle" has ruined a lot of tv shows. Westworld, for example, was ruined because they thought their job was to outsmart an audience. It's not! Tell me a fucking story!

That's what Return is about! Yes, Coop comes back but Lynch is no longer so sanguine that one good man can hold back the tide of evil. Instead, he's most effective when he's Dougie: Not trying to do good but doing it anyway. Putting out good vibes.

The more hope you put into a person, the more chance that they'll let you down. Cooper is someone that we, the audience, put a lot of hope into and really missed. When he comes back, we hope he'll fix everything, but he can't. He can only do so much.

If you don't like the story I'm telling, fine! That happens sometimes! Lynch and Frost wanted to tell a story about a small town where everything looked idyllic on the surface but was concealing great evil (just like Blue Velvet).

They used the "in" of a murder mystery and soap opera trappings to start telling that story. People grabbed on to the murder mystery instead of the story he wanted to tell. They got REALLY mad at Fire Walk With Me because of those conflicting expectations.

Ahhh. Ok. All makes sense now. Everyone's tastes are a little different, I suppose. If you don't care for Lynch beyond Blue Velvet, then a straight dose of Lynch to the eyeballs would be off-putting.

I was never part of the Lynch cult.

Ok, this bugs me. The "who killed Laura Palmer" angle was from the network. Lynch famously wasn't as interested in that, and was more interested (as he was in blue velvet) about how the light side of humanity holds the darkness at bay.

If you begin with "Who killed Laura Palmer" and then say "it doesn't matter, here's some cool weird stuff about coffee and pies and a lady who carries a log," then you're basically telling the audience to go f*** itself. I was mesmerized by Blue Velvet; couldn't believe it was the same director

Star Wars is popular because Gen X can't let go of their youth, and any new Star Wars is just trying to make Gen X feel like they did when they first watched it, which is impossible to do.

worth remembering, David Lynch directed “fix your hearts or die” specifically at transphobes. it wasn’t a generic “no mean people allowed” statement, it was said by his Twin Peaks character in defense of a trans woman he cared for and deeply respected.

What are you doing in your life when you realize you might be good at skeleton? Like, how do you find out, "I might be good at launching my body like a torpedo down an icy track!"
