A thread: Various folks get very angry at me when I don't call Gaza a genocide. Since threads about this have been showing up in my feed again (yay algorithm) I decided to do some poking around and reading on the consensus that has developed among many genocide scholars. 🧵>

I get the whole "fuck AirBNB owners" attitude here, and I am NOT among them, but the company's new policies about cleaning expectations make no sense in the context of vacation rental properties. My family has used such properties most of my life, way before ABnB existed.

The idea of a vacation rental has always been that you are spending not much more than a hotel for a LOT more amenities. Stripping the bed, removing trash, and running the dishwasher have nearly always been a part of checking out, which likely allows for quick turnover for an afternoon check-in.

In return, the cost of a vacation rental for a group is often a LOT less than the equivalent amount of hotel rooms would be AND with a much more roomy and amenity filled environment. For kosher keeping families the full kitchen is a godsend if we want a week near a beach.

I've seen this referenced but never seen the whole story AND THE WHOLE THING HAPPENED ON MY BIRTHDAY. I shall now endeavor to share this each year on my birthday as is the custom in these times.

This post is unavailable.

May his memory be for a blessing.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Small-dollar donations to Republican candidates are just apocalyptic. Selected examples here. Our forecasting research found in-state individual contributions are a strong predictor of results. Way stronger than PAC spending! votehub.com/2026/10/24/2...

I'm so deeply frustrated with the entire OT and PT field right now. Everyone is at least competent at things within certain boundaries but the moment someone or something doesn't fit those boundaries the therapists I've had are clearly clueless. That PLUS a lot of correlation/causation confusion.

3-2-1 Contact was very popular in my household and among my friends and that's where I learned about acid rain, probably right around '83 or '84. It was in kids programming!

So, in a new NYT essay about May 13, 1986 (the day she was born), Lena Dunham suggests that, back then, nobody in Canada or the US knew or cared much about acid rain. I hate to get in the way of a good generational shaming, but she’s just…er, totally wrong?

In high school my son and his friends had a rule that relationships with anyone more than a class year above/below them weren't okay because of the maturity gap between, say, 9th and 11th graders. It felt to them like, no matter what, the older student was taking advantage of the younger one.

also, and not to diminish undergrads, you're all adults with agency, the ability to vote, and soon the ability to drink legally, but like holy SHIT y'all are what would charitably be referred to as "youths" like good god how can you teach them and still be like "yes this is an adult on par with me"

4. The Harry Dresden books are not necessarily good per say but they are very enjoyable

I worked in the district everyone posts about when they post about “banning” To Kill a Mockingbird. 1. It was not banned. It was removed from the curriculum. 2. The “uncomfortable” quote isn’t from white students or parents. It was from BIPOC students and families, who wanted to move on—

I'm also a 2 with Jimmy Carter - my father peed next to him at JFK airport once in the 90s. They exchanged pleasantries after hand washing.

To flip some discourse script for a bit: what’s y’all’s Obama number (ie degrees of separation with the former president)? Mine is 3

2, but I worked for a synagogue in DC while he was President, so it's sort of embarrassing that I never made it to 1.

My favorite Cohen/Rincewind story is "Interesting Times".

Micah@rincewind.run

the first three books are a more direct parody of a particular era of sword and sorcery and they really hit the hero archetype from all angles cohen, who is the real deal but now in his late 80s conina, who is also the real deal but doesn’t want to be and nijel, who wants to be and… is not

#JewSky, Which rabbis would have done best on each social media platform? I know these ones for sure: - Rashi would have loved Tumblr. - Yochanan would have been a TikTok e-boy.

ckoppelman@ckoppelman.bsky.social

I'm picturing R Heschel as a TikTok influencer and man it does not work. Twitter would be fine, though. And he probably would not have staff manage it.

Due to various factors the MLB players who are US citizens are overwhelmingly white. The % who are registered as GOP is pretty close to party ID for white people according to Pew. Since MLB is also all male they actually may be slightly less GOP than other white men.

I have a theory that all "Great Men" of history can be sorted into either "and the device shows me boobs?" or "the moon in the fucking sky?" Lenin, Trotsky, Adam Smith, and George Washington are all "went to the moon?" Ben Franklin, Hamilton, Socrates, and Bakunin are instances of "shows me boobs?"

"The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't take selfies and post tweets." Okay, but honestly, if tweets had been a thing in 1961, many of them probably would have done.

See also Ackroyd's first draft of Ghostbusters, which was huge and had stuff like time travel in it.

the idea phase is the easiest and least valuable part of professional creativity. read the first draft of the first Star Wars if you doubt me Great art is made in the grinding, often miserable collision between the ethereal substance of an idea and the mud and blood and friction of reality

The moment when I became 100% sure of how terribly Palestinians are treated by the IDF and police was when one of the heads of Women Of The wall (a Reform rabbi) described in detail how she was treated after being arrested for the group's activities. (I was already pretty sure, this got me to 100%)

Senator Chris Van Hollen@vanhollen.senate.gov

Today, while protecting Palestinians, Brad Lander & a group of American rabbis & others were taken by the IDF. Releasing Brad isn't enough, the Israeli govt must release them all.   If this is how they treat Americans, imagine how they treat Palestinians. Trump & Rubio's silence fuels this impunity.

For those following the Emory Hillel Rabbi story, the Hillels have escalated by having a proxy attack her. If you are on FB just search for David-Seth Kirshner. He wrote as an Emory parent and friend of the rabbi who runs the GA Hillels. I'm pretty sure he's being lied to by his "friend".

Okay #DnD and #TTRPG folks, I am joining my first EVER campaign and I am making character decisions. I know the game's mechanics from podcasts, so not a complete newbie. We are playing 2014 rules. Currently interested in being a Stout Halfling Rogue Thief. Seems beginner friendly - thoughts?

Also, I am new enough to the role play aspects that I am uncertain how much alignment guides my character's choices. Chaotic Good feels about right for a rogue, but this is an area I am slightly lost about.

I can't share details, but it is nice to be sitting on a shul board and to be discussing whether a major decision is mission driven or not. I really appreciate the thoughtfulness that my fellow board members bring to the table (and continue to love my community) #jewsky

My son already got the most Jewish of home appliances for his new college apartment, a Crockpot. However, he was visibly disgusted with me when I told him about the existence of "dump meals" (the name, not what one actually is) Can't win them all...

I'm in the West Bank this week as part of the “Protect the Harvest” coalition along with Israelis for Peace, Unarmed Civilian Protection in Palestine & Protect the Harvest.

My 19 year old FINALLY moved into his college apartment (brand new building) and just informed me that he and his roommate are going to begin a sourdough starter. I didn't know what that even WAS at 19. The kids are alright.

Death by malicious negligence is a defining characteristic of concentration camps

Robert Downen@robertdownen.bsky.social

A 56-year-old Mexican man held at a federal immigration facility in Laredo was found dead in his cell Saturday morning. His family says the center would not give him medicine for diabetes, high blood pressure and a heart condition. He is the 7th person to die in ICE custody in Texas this year.
