I am a 70-something Queer. (Trans woman and lesbian). My writing and my art help keep me sane in a world that has gone further south than I would have believed possible a decade ago. You can find me at elbethe.net.

To the trans-kids facing puberty: A lot of my poems are pretty depressing, but remember when I was growing up — the 50’s and 60’s. When I was born the word ‘transsexual’ didn’t exist, let alone ‘transgender’. These poems are from *my* life, not *yours*, though, I admit, things are looking grim.

True Colors ENDA showed us your true colors. That we are not, to you, really human. That your failure is somehow our fault. That this abuse is – somehow – justified. That our freedom has no value. That our fears are not real. That our rights are forfeit to some imagined victory. 1/2

Do not ask me burn in this fire. Self-immolation is not in my nature. If my rights do not matter, then neither do yours. Do not talk to me of “the greater good”. It means nothing to the betrayed as they swing from the gibbet.

What’s that? You can see the ice caps melting? A dozen species go extinct every day? It’s raining acid? The oceans have so much mercury in them that the fish is toxic? The sky is the color of movie popcorn? The air is poison and leaves a residue on everything it touches? At least it’s not bad, bad.

Yes, hello, is that God? Yeah, hi. I have a complaint. You gave me this brain that’s designed for finding berries and avoiding lions and now people are ‘just circling back’ to see if we can ‘move the needle’ on ‘key initiatives’? NONE of those things are berries.

Apparently the government is worried about forecasters saying things like "watch out for ice", thinking it might become a meme. Always happy to be of service. ICE out of everywhere...

Been reading more than writing lately, so I'll share this: I go where I love and where I am loved, into the snow; I go to the things I love with no thought of duty or pity --H. D. The Flowering of the Rod

Two petitions one supporting the total elimination of trans people, the other signed by cis women opposing transphobia No 1. took SIX YEARS to get 39,500 signatures. No 2. took just 10 weeks to get 40,000 signatures Now tell me transphobia is more popular than trans people’s human rights.

I thought I´d put a face to the guy who ´inspired´ my poem ¨If We Allow It¨. These are the people who are running out country now. The may, at times, be at odds with each other, but they´re all heading for the same world -- one that rewards them for their arrogance.

Puberty will suck, but when you’re old enough, there will certainly be a place where you can go live as your true self. It won’t be as good as growing up that way, but trust this old tranny — better late than never.

I spent years thinking it was too late for me, but I was wrong. So, find strength where you can. Resist where possible and hide when you must. Have faith in what your heart tells you, preserve your soul for better times, and never, ever, give up.

Remember, also, that this shit won’t last forever. If enough people rise up, America can be free again and this darkness will be no more than the shadow of a passing cloud. But even if it isn’t, I hope you fight on.

The gender assigned at birth may not match your genetics. Or who you’re attracted to. Or who you know yourself to be. The interaction of all these things are what make us who we are.

#queer #poetry Like Any Other Queer Do not wag your finger at me and say “you can’t just choose to be a woman”. This is not a fantasy or some idle whim. I was born knowing, that I was not the boy that everyone said I was. Do you really think we choose this?

2/ All queers know we only have one choice: to live our lives honestly and openly or to hide behind pretense and falsehoods. All queers know that the closet kills, that darkness shrivels the heart and soul, and that it is far better to walk in the light.

3/ But unlike other queers, we must go begging hat in hand, hoping we can pass the gatekeeper’s tests, until the doctors are done and we — like any other queer — are free to live our lives in the sun and leave the darkness behind.

1/ When did you choose to be queer? Tell me it wasn’t simply who you are. Tell me it isn’t an integral part of you, that you could have taken another path. That, even now, you could change. Prove to me that it isn’t immutable.
