I would caution about entirely abandoning nuclear, though. We still want something to replace base load from coal/gas during solar non-producing hours. Keep on doing the research to get those costs down.

Jan Rosenow@janrosenow.bsky.social

Solar has overtaken nuclear. A decade ago it supplied 1% of the world's power. In 2025 it met three quarters of global demand growth. Almost nobody saw it coming. I spoke to Jocelyn Timperley at BBC Future about why. www.bbc.co.uk/future/artic...

Both adults AND kids are way better this way. My ND kids have had great school experiences, better than they would have had when I was a kid. That's progress as a society.

Nadia Oxford@nadiaoxford.bsky.social

Kids are allowed to be weird. This is something I talk about on Blood God this week (PLUG), but I notice kids aren’t told to sit down and shut up or smacked around for being weird nearly as much as they were when I was a kid. There is no universe where I would’ve gotten my ADHD diagnosis as a kid.

Frozen food. It was usually disgusting in the 80s and 90s. Now most of it is actually really good. We don't mock microwave meals all that much anymore.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

But it IS a sign of Aaron's general lack of competence, including the hiring decisions that bring in people who do this kind of stuff. Utah County does NOT have a great track record on clerks going back at least two decades. #utpol

This is a metaphor for the rest of the "best run" state. We're dessicating it through drought and water mismanagementas we continue to prioritize developers and farmers. #utpol

NEW: A bird flu outbreak has been raging uncontrolled on a Utah mink farm for two months. Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. But officials haven’t acted — instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade.

Being a defender is HARD right now. I can find potential vulns faster than I can validate and report them, and even faster than teams can write, test, and ship fixes. That's not even accounting for what attackers are finding that we haven't seen yet. The barbarians are at the gates.

Jason Koebler@jasonkoebler.bsky.social

wrote about "Black October," the PHP vulnerability, and the AI-fueled dread and panic I'm seeing among almost all of the cybersecurity experts I've ever known. I think people w/ LLMs are brute forcing software the same way they brute forced social media w/ slop www.404media.co/php2shell-bl...

Each one of these announced vulns/breaches (for reference, at least a dozen large ones so far this week) triggers an incident to look for exposure and have a reaction plan. Which takes away from vuln discovery and reporting. It's a DDoS on staff.

I wouldn't even install that app on a burner phone in Bangladesh controlled over Tor.

ETX Gov@etxgov.myatproto.social

Email from the official Social Security site. Uh, did they create an account for my kids even when I told them no? Because it certainly looks like they went ahead and created an account for every kid to juice their numbers.

It's great when I'm traveling with all my kids. When it's just me and/or my wife? Nope, never, not worth it.

It is kind of crazy how much I used airbnb in the early days and found great cheap places to stay, and often would meet nice locals with friendly info to share about their neighborhoods. And now the entire thing just... sucks? I don't even consider using it anymore. It's been years.

Not a lot of "federal overreach" types will say much, if anything, about this. #utpol

"The private key sizes of the compromised keys ranged from 3 to 8 bits." I know bits are expensive now, but come ON.

Dan Goodin@dangoodin.bsky.social

Security personnel around the world are on high alert following the discovery of eight TLS certificates with private keys so weak they could allow anyone to mint trusted browser and app credentials for any site on the Internet. arstechnica.com/security/202...

Amazon hired the stupidest people on the face on the planet to design their Kindle app. You cannot setup a Kindle via their app if your WiFi network uses smart steering with the same SSID for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. It will simply not be visible. The workaround is a dummy SSID on 2.4GHz only.

This is why I say there's no reason to vote for Republicans. They know what's happening and won't stop it, either from complicity or cowardice. There are some good people who stay that believe, falsely, that there is a recovery path. I no longer explain to them why it doesn't exist.

Jonathon M. Floyd@jfloyd314.bsky.social

The Bush-era GOP was still a functioning political party. The current Republican Party is effectively a front for the Trump family's criminal enterprises. It does not function as a political party, and is not staffed with the intent to do so.

Even if you could look past the horrifix ownership, the technical changes to the platform that enable harassment and botting should have been enough to ruin the platform for you.

Sure are a lot of hostage-takers in the replies. I'm adult enough to throw all of my policy preferences into the incenerator to vote for rule of law candidates, even the imperfect ones.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Look at the shabby state and increasingly authoritarian trajectory of the country and ask yourself if we can endure 2 more years of a lawless Trump administration wreaking havoc with no check from Congress, then vote accordingly. This is not the time for a protest vote or purity politics.

"Hey, this candidate isn't meeting me on my most important issues." Cool. Should you try to get the persuadable one elected or the arsonist that would just as soon let you bleed out in the street? There's one obvious correct choice.

If the people and legislature are co-equals as per the Utah Constitution, then it makes no sense to pass a law putting citizen initiatives on unequal footing. No on Amendment B. #utpol

Hopefully Ukraine will keep on going until they find the right one.

Y’all, I hate to rain on the dead bot parade, but the Yandex data center destruction doesn’t seem to have significantly impacted social media bots. I made temporal graphs of X posts about AfD around the time of the attack and there’s no sign of a sudden dip or residual impact on that conversation.

Given that Columbus Day was started by Italian-Americans to combat anti-Italian sentiment and we've definitely accomplished that mission, I think it's safe to quietly retire said holiday.

Being around these people stains your soul and causes madness, just like The One Ring. Almost like the point of LOTR was that you should run screaming from promises of unlimited power.

I've started using the analogy that birthing a software project or interactive website is the same as having a kid. It's really easy to do the creation part, but it's an 18 year commitment that will keep you up at night wondering who put you in this situation. It's sometimes enjoyable though.

Those of us who have seen F/LOSS projects on GitHub that shipped zero updates since the initial commit know better than to go chasing these "alternatives" down.
