I've always been inspired by Karim, Ginny, and the whole team behind Mathalicious / Citizen Math over the years. Sometimes they've swum with the current, sometimes upstream, but it's always been the current that's changed rather than their values.

What they've made is beautiful. The way they've made it is also beautiful, even if it hasn't been easy. No big VC or private equity backers. But the payoff, for everyone, is that they're actually able to do something bananas like make every lesson free without asking permission. What a gift.

We have had nearly two decades of panic about Free Speech on Campus and not a single case, not even the ones they made up, were as bad as what's happening now

This is the text of the email just sent to hundreds of international students telling them that their visas have been revoked due to activism or social media posts.

This is a good thread by one of my "trusted sources," @polotek.bsky.social.

So. I think it's important to share news about what's happening. But I'm trying to square that with the other reality that it contributes to doomscrolling. I think we need to start putting these things into context and talking about what we are learning or what we should take away from it.

NEW—After a day of uncertainty on where agents took Tufts student Rumeysa Ozturk, she appears to be in a Louisiana facility. 1400+ miles from Somerville, Massachusetts, where she was taken. A judge ordered to not take her out of state without 48 hour notice. She was detained last night.

(a) stunning visual. (b) any differential geometers able to weigh in?

David J. Gillcrist@davidjgillcrist.com

I have a legitimate technical question for differential geometers like @diffgeom.bsky.social on how to map a hemisphere to a closed connected surface while still preserving a particular sorta-Euclidean metric/distance. Here's a Desmos graph that kinda illustrates this goal. All input is welcome 😁🧮♾️

Can you find a Pythagorean Triple containing... • exactly one multiple of 5? • exactly two multiples of 5? • three multiples of 5? • no multiples of 5? Any conjectures? #iTeachMath #MathSky

Wow, I had no idea about this stat. The whole thread is gold.

Maybe its ok to cut 75% of federal employees because there are so many of them? No. We have about the same number of feds as we had in the 1960s. As a percentage of the population, they are at historical lows. (We actually need more employees, esp. younger employees, but good luck recruiting them).
