Halloween is the best holiday because the pervasive trickster energy of its accreted energy over time deflects the need to *try* to have a good time, which often ruins other holidays with try-hard drunken desperation. New Years Eve is the worst example of this phenomenon

i need y’all to understand that spiritually i’m a grandmother frog, squatting on the banks of a fetid river, watching and burping at you, crossing my arms over my chest to slide back down into the muck while i contemplate the ridiculous beauty of all life from the chthonic depths

here’s the thing, trolls feed on your outrage. that’s their modus operandi, disruption of your equanimity by hijacking your nervous system. ofc they use this to hijack their own nervous systems too, but trolls need an audience to outrage to continue existing

can you handle letting go of potential clout? can you handle learning to like the feeling of being relaxed as a baseline, instead of the feeling of disregulation you’ve normalized? do you want to retrain your stress levels and the rewards to which you respond, reclaiming your nervous system agency?

to return to trolling, trolls do all of this too. a person puts a slur in a username to waste your time and energy, and bc they know your lack of somatic self awareness (your poor ability to self regulate) will make your crusading the very tidal wave that carries their message to a wider audience

some of this audience will be the folks for whom you’re crusading, and they will be more hurt, threatened, and disregulated by a slur than you. ask yourself, do they deserve that so that you get some clout? how could you do what feels right to you without giving trolls more airtime?

to return to dopamine addiction, i don’t exclude myself from this. here i am. it is entirely reasonable to be outraged and angry sometimes, AND it is a woefully undervalued skill to learn to control where and when this happens to you. learning how to do it is a reclamation of your embodied agency.

it is a skill to notice when your nervous system is disregulated. take a break, breathe, stretch, go for a walk, so you don’t lash out at the wrong people. when you practice this skill online, you are also practicing it for your family and irl friends and communities. they need you to be your best!

ask yourself, are you whipping yourself into a fervor online to score points, in a way that makes you less effective irl? does it make you worse to your family, chosen or biological, and the people and communities you care about?

the cycle of outrage comes from the desire for online clout, which is dopamine addiction. you get used to the feeling of nervous system upregulation, and it starts to feel normal. you can no longer recognize it as a state of negative stress, best avoided chronically and best avoided online

clout, by the way, is not a great word for the normalization of dopamine addiction / nervous system disregulation — it’s obfuscating and gets people up on their hind legs, that is, even more upregulated. but it’s not untrue either.
