"Fressoz retains one important point: a rising clean-energy share does not guarantee fossil fuels decline quickly enough for climate goals."

There is no more normal. Normal was decades ago or centuries even. It is all a slippery shifting baseline since then...
Attention to signs is dependent on understanding. Understanding is crafted by action.
At the same time on @edconway.bsky.social substack.
Solving electricity demand with low carbon generation is just one part. As Fressoz says it is the easy part.
We also see countries where rapid growth of solar and wind has played a key role in absolutely reducing power sector emissions, not just meeting new demand. The US has seen power sector emissions fall 37%, the EU by 55%, and the UK by 75% since 2005:
Full-page apology for record coal expansion at Fiji climate talks. While Australia signed up to a Transition Away from Fossil Fuels, we keep approving new ones, last week was a new monster coal mine. It's shameful & we apologise to the world.

Cars have long been commonly associated with freedom in the United States, and it is often assumed that everyone in the country loves to drive. But our latest research tells a different story of a population seeking another type of independence: freedom to move around without cars.
When will this remarkable growth in sun and wind powered electricity start putting a dent in total GHG emissions?
From all the other charts on rising temperatures and risks by @zekehausfather.com it seems we need more of an abolition than a transition.
Non-hydro renewables (primarily wind and solar) are on track to pass gas this year as the second largest source of electricity generation globally. The rapid over the past 10 years is pretty remarkable!
Hat tip to Michael Liebreich for the plot idea.
We heard it before. Time for action.
“The diagnosis is unambiguous – pressure is rising across every planetary boundary already outside the safe operating space. It means that the risk of large-scale, persistent and potentially irreversible change is increasing”

This was an interesting episode! And I never heard anyone say "many transitions have been made" so many times. I don't say all the examples were wrong but Novara really needs to invite Jean Baptiste Fressoz!

Got to work with some incredibly talented filmmakers to turn End Times Fascism into a ten minute video essay. Check it out below.

Electrification of heavy transports have started in China and will gain speed in Europe. Still it is late and slow.
How many years would it take to switch all European Trucks? 20-25 years?
BYD's first semi with blade battery 2.0 introduced to Europe. Faster charging than all the competition and longer range than the Tesla Semi.
Tesla is coming in late and will have a hard time competing with trucks from European & Chinese manufacturers.

Copenhagen biking evolved a lot, but new studies say cycling has stalled. Here is a article from last year pointing to some new plans for Copenhagen! A big investment is made to build a long bridge.
@brenttoderian.bsky.socialwww.theguardian.com/environment/...
“Copenhagen reported that 62% of its residents are now commuting to work or school by bike — an increase from 52% in 2015 & 36% in 2012, when the City Council launched a 14-year-plan to improve the quality, safety & comfort of cycling.”
#Copenhagen chose. They keep choosing even better every year.
Norwegian Corvus Energy and BYD cooperation launched the first product.
I wonder if there will be Corvus-BYD systems in the 10 new ships BYD have on order.

Fossil fuels and a surging El Niño are supercharging marine heatwaves across a shocking 82% of our oceans.
This is a reminder that just 32 fossil fuel companies are responsible for half of global carbon emissions. While they profit, everyone else pays.
Really interesting article on nitrogen fertiliser! It is also produced with fossil gas, so cutting overuse would cut methane emissions. Let's untangle the agricultural sector for a real transition.
Get this!
Cleaning up pollution caused by the dairy industry’s nitrogen fertiliser costs NZ ten times more than farmers spend buying the fertiliser in the first place.
One of the many ways we subsidise the dairy industry.

I would really be interested to hear more on the possible role of the bikes in the transition to a sustainable society! Cities as Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Münster are somehow doing it.
Who has good input on the topic?

A great talk with historian Jean-Baptiste Fressoz and physicist Bjørn Samset @bjornsamset.bsky.social at the Norwegian science academy.
Fressoz mentions the bicycle as a "very important technology in the transition".
Topics: solar energy, CCS, carbon tax, etc.

Not sure about the "return" part, but the limit and adapt are fundamental conditions for life. Sadly, rather than radicallising everyone and everything, the news will just be more munition for the trendy catastrophist climate doomsday people.
We really need a true and international just TRANSITION.
Global warming is set to cross 1.5°C, pushing climate risks and impacts to increasingly dangerous heights, a new UNEP report warns.
Predicted impacts include extreme weather and threats to human health and economies.
Lets play pick your favourite picture... so solar capacity is bigger. What about generation? What about coal generation actually falling as fast as solar capacity increase?
Solar capacity growth shows that solar industry is busy, but unfortunatly it doesn't necessarily equal falling emissions.
Great to see Novara interviewing Kevin. No-one else in climate debate comes close in terms of combining no-bullshit insight with walking the walk personally (not gallivanting around the world spewing emissions for peer esteem).
The difficulty of the energy transition and the wish to continue with bussiness and politics as usual created the need for the fantasy of CCS. When the world gets rid of the mirage meaningful change is possible.
More evidence that promises to use CCS to offset fossil fuel emissions is just propaganda.
After years of hyping “limitless” CCS, Exxon is initiatiting a lawsuit against the EU for calling their bluff and requiring them to actually, you know, capture some emissions.

Energy supply is entangled not only materially but very much politically.
It makes these apparent pardoxes of the energy transition possible when the share of renewables grow in parallell to the absolute capacity and generation of coal power in China.
New from us: China's coal-fired power generation rebounded in the first half of 2026. Rapid expansion of coal power capacity led to worsening oversupply, reflected both in the increase of wasted wind and solar generation and in falling utilisation of coal power plants.

"Base power" as nuclear and coal is becoming more & more & more intermittent.

This is way it is never the "new normal" even without tipping points. Emissions adds up syncronized to the energy additions in society.
What we might see by 2030 is that the last decade was beyond some tipping point driving even faster acceleration.

Good chart explaining some of the complexities with rebound effects. This gives some context to why efficiency in energy use is often not giving the results we would want.
