The harakeke by my local stormwater catchment has burst into flower. This tauhou (waxeye) looks well indulged and deserving of a rest on one of last year’s fronds. 🪶🇳🇿

Last night’s NZ Geographic Photographer of the Year awards event didn’t yield any winners trophies or highly commended certificates for my chiaroscuro coots but I’m still proud to have been there as a back-to-back finalist. Just got to keep shooting, keep improving, & try to be back again next year!

I’ve just found out this dotty was rescued as a tiny chick at Ōrakei, nursed to fledging by BirdCare Aotearoa then released at Omaha in June. As a regular donor to BCA, it’s a thrill to have run into the results of their wonderful mahi.

A tūturiwhatu (New Zealand dotterel) foraging for breakfast this morning. 🪶🇳🇿

A weweia (New Zealand dabchick) at Western Springs. I took 2,013 frames this morning. This was frame 2. The other 2,011 were pretty much killing time until Atomic opened. 🪶🇳🇿

Thanks for all the suggestions about what to do about this. The community group that looks after the sanctuary have reached out to me now and I’ve given them permission to do whatever they see fit with the image. I’ll let them take it from here.

This morning at Omaha. Big shoutout to old mate who jogged right through the roosting godwits twice and left the door in the predator proof fence wide open on his way into the sanctuary. 🪶🇳🇿

'You might not know what your style is, but you probably already know what you like. You know which of your pictures make you happy and which leave you cold. You know which other photographers’ work makes you stop scrolling and look.' simple clear useful advice 👇🏽

This gull is a good likeness of me when I was starting my bird photography journey and people told me to “develop your own unique style!” I’ve written 500 words on my website about the part they didn’t tell me - how the hell you do that. birds.photos/2026/10/07/s...

birds.photosStyleAs a relative beginner, I once attended a workshop run by a professional photographer about how to take good portraits. It was interesting and useful, but one thing puzzled me. The point he stresse…

I’m getting very grumpy with all these overcast weekend dawns we keep getting. Still, managed to catch this kakīānau preening in a good spot this morning. 🪶🇳🇿

I had a wonderful session with the kuaka (bar-tailed godwits) at Omaha this morning. They were very chilled out, resting and relaxing after their long migration all the way from Alaska’s arctic tundra. 🪶🇳🇿

The New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year exhibition is currently on in Atrium on Takutai, downtown Tāmaki Makaurau. My amazing work colleague Amy gave up her lunch break to ride the CRL and take this for me today.

My mother holding a kōtare (sacred kingfisher) we rescued from the road this morning. I was able to take some pictures while we waited outside the emergency vet clinic for the nurse to come out and get him/her. 🪶🇳🇿

Nothing new today because I’m putting up election hoardings for the Labour Party - extremely miffed it’s a gorgeous sunny morning for the first Saturday in ages and I can’t shoot… In lieu of new work, here’s a re-edit of a shot taken on a more typical Saturday morning a few weeks ago. 🪶🇳🇿

Slim pickings at Omaha this morning. Tide was a bit too low and I only got about three minutes of interesting light, during which I managed to get this shot! Then I wasted a couple of hours trying unsuccessfully to get something worth keeping in the murk. 🪶🇳🇿

I photographed a public meeting on understaffing at Waitākere Hospital for the Labour Party last night. Always a challenging assignment that gets me out of my creative comfort zone. They like lots of wide angle shots, which is a long way from my wheelhouse! Getting better at it though...
