The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

If your reaction to hearing someone is asexual is to wonder why they need to label themselves at all then you truly have no idea what it is like to be asexual. Sit with that. Or go enjoy a world that is catered to your experiences, feelings, and identity, and don't bother ever talking to us again.

What a day. There’s so much other countries can learn from the political organisation in Brazil’s second round

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

I’m scared of jinxing it, but holy shit Lula is winning by about 3 million votes so far 83.7% of votes counted

The Student List had no party machinery. It operated through university assemblies, protests and hiking between cities & towns. They had 2% of national TV political advertising airtime vs 93% for Vučić. This is one of the most remarkable grassroots democratic victories in modern European history.

with the partisan voting interference, I think this margin should rise with the places reporting later hoping to sleep better tonight 🤗

Taniel@taniel.bsky.social

With 83% of the vote counted nationwide, Lula has stretched his lead to 2.8 million votes. That's a lead of 51.4% to 48.6%. That puts him on track for a victory that could be larger than his 1.8% win four years ago, which would be an immense comeback. He's even up in Minas Gervais now, by 0.6%.

ah yes fascists

Reports that some in Bolsonaro camp (shock!) preparing the way not accept the result. One of his most senior parliamentarians has said: “Either we win. Or we win. You’ve been warned.”

Biiiiiiiig stretch from Duck. All of the kittens are getting fatter, and have more energy. Yay for improving milk supplies! Duck has been the smallest kitten but her belly has been full every time I checked in the last 48 hours.

whoever 'wins' this will leave a deeply divided nation (I want Lula to win, but thinking about what comes next, given how poisonous the divides are)

Taniel@taniel.bsky.social

Lula has taken the overall, countrywide lead back. With 62% of precincts counted, he is ahead 50.6% to 49.4%, which is an edge of roughly 900,000 votes. He is also getting the shift he needs (compared to the first round) in virtually every state that has reported most of the vote.

For two years, student-led protests have raged against Aleksandar Vučić and his corrupt government in Serbia. Today, in parliamentary elections, he was toppled. One of the most sustained protest movements in recent European history has succeeded. Resistance works.

Brazil will get more attention either way it goes, but this is truly an incredible victory for the student protesters. We ran this in March 2025, which explained the movement's strengths but seemed overly optimist in the months that followed. 18 months later, they succeeded. Gen Z strikes again.
