The thing you need to know Obama is that he dronebombed civilians, expanded hydrocarbon extraction and sponsored the Israeli occupation, but with a really cool aesthetic

Not a Brazil understander here but what’s the story with Roberto Unger??

Albert Pinto@70sbachchan.bsky.social

RT @benjaminfogel.bsky.social I can't think of a starker example of the collapse of an intellectual tradition in Brazil than esteemed Harvard philosopher Roberto Mangabeira Unger, who served as a minister in both Lula's & Dilma's govt, declaring his support for Flávio www.band.com.br/politica/ele...

The political function of the ‘minister for housing’ is not to make sure housing is affordable and universally provided. It’s to sustain housing understood as an asset, an industry, an investment. Largely as the banking sector depends on it . Managing the social fallout is a secondary concern

The Journal@thejournal.ie

Pressed on the issue during an interview on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, housing minister James Browne has repeatedly declined to say whether he wants house prices to fall, instead saying he wants them to "stabilise" jrnl.ie/7200251

That is staggering. It is straightforward political repression by the UK in furtherance of its complicity in the Gaza genocide. Sally - who realises literature is political - has put something real on the line. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

We are striking today as part of a national public sector strike in Ireland. It is the first time in 40 years that a national pay agreement has been allowed to expire and unless there is a new pay agreement, we are taking an effective pay cut. We refuse to accept a cut in our pay.

Watching ‘Ms Rachel’ with my daughter and it’s trying to teach kids… to read? Even though it’s aimed at 3 year olds? Is trying to teach literacy to toddlers an American thing?

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

Man who won’t give his employees piss breaks claims many piss breaks on the horizon

This article annoyed me more than I expected. It makes a fetish of the small-class conversation (not itself a bad thing) & indulges in florid over-intellectualisation of basing assessment around that (again, not itself bad but unfeasible for most instructors). In short, an aristocratic sensibility.

‘Working with grassropts activists in Russia’ *sounds* nice but may as well be science fiction. Almost certainly, the war will end only through diplomacy

🇺🇸🇷🇺 Bernie Sanders on what he thinks must be done to end the Ukraine war: "We must rally and work with grassroots activists in Russia to put an end to Putin’s disastrous war in Ukraine, which has led to the deaths of 500,000 Russian soldiers as well as mass destruction

..I hadn’t actually planned on visiting a bakery but in recent years - I think due to stress - I have this amazingly heightened sense of smell. I am basically like a dog. & as I wandered down a street I was hit first that distinctive smell of butter baked into croissants, then a tang of sourdough..

YouTube substantially increased the subscription for its ad free version and apropos of nothing I saw a history video billed as ‘human voiced’ as if it were some boutique premium concept 🙄

Fundamentally don’t believe in sending voice notes, think it’s just very inefficient. So i just send them to one male friend effectively as retaliation for sending them to me

I always thought Ireland had a funny euphemism for WW2 (‘the Emergency’) but just learned the equivalent Icelandic phrase was something like ‘the situation’ or ‘the circumstances’

The whole gist of the 1998 peace agreement is that sovereignty over Northern Ireland is decided by its population. And then the British just say stuff like this - like they have the final say. To the British, NI is simultaneously ‘other’, but ‘ours’.

Strongly disagree with idea of ‘banning tech in the classroom.’ Those who teach adults should have humility about different ways ppl learn. Devices are distracting but paternalism is not the answer. Deciding whether to take notes with a pen or a word processor should be the student’s responsibility.

‘Can I customise your laptop with stickers’ asks the 9 year old. ‘Yes’. ‘What would you like’ ‘Maybe a motivational slogan’. … ‘why did you put ‘just one coffee’.?’ ‘Because you drink too much coffee’

It turns out Cofnas is being disciplined on quite specific grounds – publicly misrepresenting the scope of his post doc as being about race science, and making racist statements said to be criminal under Belgian law. Not directly based on orchestrating a ‘pile on’

it's possible there are grounds for disciplining Cofnas - let's admit, none of us really know Ghent's regulations or the precise charges - but there is an awful lot of slippage and sloppiness in what ppl are saying. People are arguing he shouldn't have been hired, & I'm sure they're right,...

... but that's not grounds for dismissal. His 'exposé' of alleged plagiarism did set in train a wider whirlwind much of it racially motivated, but he can hardly be sanctioned for what the media,, did. An odious character, but important not to dispense with process.

A design flaw of contemporary workplaces is that the people who decide how much is reasonable for us to have to dick around with computer stuff, are people who themselves have an abnormally high tolerance, and even liking for dicking around with computer stuff

Yesterday far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for nightly killings in Gaza of 30–40 people who he says are "not worthy of life.” Now Palestinians in the West Bank are being marked with numbers. Sound familiar?
