Check out our first post from Senior Policy Fellow @michaelslinden.bsky.social on the federal deficit debate. 📈 The question is not “Do we have a spending problem or a revenue problem.” But rather, “How do we judge whether the federal budget is aimed at the right things?”

The federal deficit debate often boils down to spending vs. revenue. But what if that's the wrong question? In a new report, @michaelslinden.bsky.social argues today's spending trajectory was largely anticipated decades ago, while repeated tax cuts reduced revenues and widened the budget gap. ➡️

Canada's expected tariff retaliation today applies to only a slice of the country's total imports from the U.S., so immediate harm should be limited, but U.S. escalation could threaten a much wider economic base, including the auto industry.

Chris Bangert-Drowns@cbdecon.bsky.social

The collapse of trade talks with Canada puts the U.S. on unsure footing with its second-largest trading partner. The over 10% of all U.S. imports originating from our northern neighbor have faced a lower average tariff rate compared to other countries, but that could soon change.
