Via @stephenjcaruso.bsky.social, who really should post here more than there, I'm counting $8.52M from Jeffrey Yass to try to preserve a GOP state senate majority in PA (candidate giving, SRCC, and State GOP) and another $1.1M to stanch the bleeding in the state house, where Dems lead 103-100.

“He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened up a Cheesecake Factory” — Obama

Honestly, most sports can easily become coed without issue. Swimming. Tennis. Soccer. Basketball. Baseball. We only segregate by gender because men's sport leagues don't want to share funding and/or ad revenue. Keeping all sports coed reinforces that financial power. It's black & white leagues 2.0.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

There are people, even some trans people, who think that we can give up sports to appease bigots. That if we give up on sports, this all goes away. That is a lie. I have reported on this for years, and EVERY state that passed a sports ban as a moderate compromise has gone on to pass worse.

Finished my second read of Murakami's AFTER DARK, which I completely misunderstood when I first read it a few years ago. The book is a puzzle narrative that's ultimately about a young woman wishing she could understand and assuage the pain her sister is experiencing. It's quite good.

Most takes that it's just a moody short story aren't getting at the puzzle structure or the actual story. Similar to the way critics missed the actual solution to COLORLESS TSUKURU TAZAKI.

Something has happened to the word "autistic" where there are now people in their 30s and 40s self-identifying as autistic without knowing what autism actually is. And today I was assumed to be autistic by someone in their 30s simply because I was running late to class.

Will this have much of an impact this November or in future elections? Just trying to estimate how many students wont be able to show other forms of permissible identification.

El-Sayed: "We had a little debate. Or I had a debate and he just pointed at me and said, 'He's Muslim.'"

Current Senate predictions: R seats Ds pickup NC, AK, TX, and OH Rs keep KS, MS, NE, SC, and FL Toss up: ME and IA D seats Ds keep GA, MN, NH Toss up: MI So... between D+3 (R majority) or D+6 (D majority)

Michigan should not have been this close given the erosion within Trump's base. A real chance the polls are understating D support. But also a real chance that El-Sayed loses.

I feel like the racist attacks on El-Sayed may work, not because people believe the lies, but because it forces him to play defense, rather than discuss healthcare and gas prices. Meanwhile Rogers doesn't have to answer for any of the attacks. Or maybe I'm just being pessimistic.

The attack ad against Acton is another in a long list of right-wing gotchas that have blown up in their face -- Eric Schmitt's attack on Jack Smith, the conspiracy that Talarico was in rehab, Tommy's heckling of El-Sayed, etc etc. Their echo chambers keep convincing them to do incredibly dumb shit

Wait, wait ... National Review is shivving Ramaswamy? Christ

Eric Shmeric reposted

That Vivek Ramaswamy ad might end up being the worst own goal we've seen in a major race. Platforming the estranged mother of your opponent to attack her, only for everyone to discover that the mother protected the rapist of her 12-year-old daughter and stayed married to him, is beyond despicable.

Eric Shmeric reposted

Two thoughts: This false, despicable ad is proof that Vivek Ramaswamy knows he is about to lose to Amy Acton. No mother who loves her daughter would do this. Her complicity reveals her.

Micro dosing in action.

NVIDIA CEO JENSEN HUANG SAYS EVERY COMPANY IN THE FUTURE WILL HAVE TWO FACTORIES, ONE REAL AND ONE DIGITAL, WITH THE DIGITAL FACTORY SO REAL IT MIGHT AS WELL BE REAL

This is the "scientific papers use the same sentence construction, grammar, and linguistic codes as novels, and are therefore more fictional than we think" argument that defined my doc theory seminar's "postmodern skepticism" unit. Good times.

Semi related, but it doesn't seem like many Dem Jews in Michigan are voting for Rogers, for CBS News would be running countless stories on these people if they existed.

Right, the problem was that it showed this correspondent was (1) biased & bigoted and (2) unable to understand what had actually transpired at the event, both of which are disqualifying for a reporter.

Steve Vladeck@stevevladeck.bsky.social

Yeah, the problem with the tweet *wasn’t* that it violated “CBS News standards.”

Musk now waging military attacks on Ukraine reminds me of that moment in Carlito's Way, after the coked-out lawyer (Sean Penn) brutally murders a mob boss, and Carlito (Pacino) looks into his his eyes and says "You're not a lawyer anymore. You're a gangster." More people should watch Carlito's Way.

This framing probably will just increase Dem turnout in these states.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

Ludicrous framing here from @nytimes.com. No serious Dems ever thought these would be slam dunks. And it's premature to let a centrist group get in a self-interested shot like this before we even know if these candidates will actually fare worse in the elections than other ones. Indefensible.

The more combative Dems get, the more of this they will run into. It will be a coordinated wave of elite opinion, scolding them, tamping them down. The fight strategy *only* works if they are willing to bull their way through it, blow it off, mock it. (Their history does not raise one's hopes.)

Finished Calvino's INTO THE WAR. Not bad, but Calvino's publications are such a mess. They should've packaged his 3 INTO THE WAR stories with his 1940s and 50s stories collected in NUMBERS IN THE DARK. Just to round out a fuller experience.
